Live from Lutherhill!

I am writing this email from Camp Lutherhill in La Grange, Texas. I have been spending some great quality time with our children and children from around Texas. One of the LYLES (high school youth who learn about service here), who was one of my members at Hosanna, remarked that she fondly remembers as a child climbing on my back at the Lutherhill pool. I hope that our children will have these same memories and learn the valuable lesson that others care and love them besides their families. I am also sharing some great Bible teaching moments with them. We have great kids by the way. They are enthusiastic, positive and full of fun. For videos of some of our activities go to our Facebook account. We have put them on this site for management and control reasons. You will need to be a friend of Peace to view them. You will also need a Facebook account.

I have also done a video of the Executive Director, Evan Molin, talking about the Capital Funding Campaign that is raising money for much needed facilities here at Lutherhill. He also invites us to be involved as a congregation. The video is on our blog at http://welcometothepeacelutherancommunity.blogspot.com/

Be sure to watch it.

Sunday Events

The big event for this Sunday is the congregation meeting after the 11:00 service to discuss and decide on the direction for our repairs and improvements to the nave and sanctuary. The leadership needs to make sure that everyone understands our options and gives direction for which one to choose. The reason why we are discussing this is because the sanctuary will be unavailable for a couple of Sundays due to the repainting and repairs and the thinking is that since we have funding available that we should proceed with some improvements to avoid the sanctuary being unavailable in the future. Some of these improvements include flooring replacement, building a platform for the choir, upgrading the sound system and making the altar rail removable. The thinking of the council is that if we are going to make any improvements it would do us well to hire a consultant to advise us to make sure that we don't make mistakes. Anything we do we will also have to live with.

Of course, there is a financial impact to the decision and this also needs to be evaluated. Please come and share your ideas. Remember this is our congregation and we need to come together in order to move forward.

This Sunday we will also begin our bread of life readings from the sixth chapter of John. The title of my sermon is We Come to the Hungry Feast" and I will be preaching about our common hunger and the abundance God offers to our needs. God meets our needs with God's abundance.

During the 11:00 service we will welcome Greg Horndt into the family of Peace Lutheran by Affirmation of Baptism. Please be sure to introduce yourself to Greg following the service.

We will also be inviting worshippers to begin thinking of themselves as the bread of life for others. In order to teach this we will have loaves of bread available for distribution to those who are in need of emotional and spiritual support. We will have a flyer that will go with these loaves. You may also take a flower and purchase a loaf to give away. We want to think of our community not only as a group of people feasting on the love of Christ, but also as a community that invites others to the "hungry feast".

Google Groups

Please go to this link for access to Peace Google Groups. Google groups is a new way for us to collaborate on our mission and ministry at Peace without depending on face-to-face meetings. During my recovery I have prepared training videos on collaboration and online collaboration using Google Groups. I have also prepared videos on how to access and use Google groups. You can also access groups on our website at http://welcometopeace.com.

All you have to do to join most groups is to just click on the link. Some you might need to have an invitation. To fully use the Google Group you will need to have a Google Account using your normal email address. Just go to google.com and click "sign in" on the top right corner and follow the instructions (I have a training video to help explain this).

The model for leading our ministries will be workshops and Google Group online collaboration. Of course, ministry and mission at Peace is always more about the Indian than the bow and arrow. What matters most is your willingness to do the mission and ministry at Peace. We are moving away from a Pastor and Staff led church, to a mission and ministry led church. We are trying to establish a collaborative environment for ministry when lay people work together in doing the work of God. Collaboration is fun and exciting and I hope that you will give it a try. You can now do the work from the comfort of your home.

Pony Express

We will be giving a full report at our congregation meeting on July 26. I remind you that we have July 31 date for getting pledges into the church. As you can see below we have already begun work on the projects.

If you would like to join them, go the to labyrinth Google group on the Google Groups page.

"Peace Alive!" October Preaching, Teaching Reaching Mission Oct 4-7,

We had our first workshop on this event and are changing the name of the PTR to "Peace Alive". "Peace Alive" will be a 4 evening (Sun-Wed) event that features a meal, 30 minute preaching service with an outside speaker and a variety of 60-90 minute workshops. The intent is to help Peace focus on our mission and ministry to the community. We have a Google Group and invite you to join. . We will have our next workshop on Wednesday, August 12 at 7:00pm at Peace to work on this project. This workshop and the Google Group are open to anyone interested in growing our church with the Gospel and reaching out to our community. We are looking for gifts of organizing, publicity, meal serving and music. Come with your ideas.

Vacation Bible School August 2-6

Come down to Crocodile Dock and join us for Vacation Bible School, August 2-6 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. At Crocodile Dock, kids will keep an eye out for “God in action” in their everyday lives and they’ll discover how they can be a God Sighting by showing Christ’s love. Pre-register your children at http://www.groupvbs.com/webtoybox/myvbs/peacevbs09. Mark your calendars and get the kids excited about Vacation Bible School. There will also be two adult classes offered: Pastor Tart – “Surrounded by Joy” and Jan Woodard – “Listening”.

We are still in need of volunteers, if you are interested please email Jennifer Sanders atjldahse79@hotmail.com

Adult VBS Classes

Pastor Tart will teach a class entitled, “Surrounded by Joy – Paul’s Letter to the Philippians”. We will be learning about the life Paul envisions for the Christian community. We will learn about what it means to serve, what it means to stand firm in the faith and what it means to have the joy of the Lord constantly surrounding us. The study is for everyone, no matter what level of Biblical knowledge.

Jan Woodard will teach a class entitled, “Listening”. …[Mary] sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. Luke 10:39. Sounds simple enough, yet slowing down and hearing what God has to say can be quite difficult. In the class, we’ll study how Samuel, Elijah, Moses, and others made the most of what God had to say to them.

We hope that you will plan on bringing a friend and joining us for one of these adult classes during VBS.

Supplies Needed For Vacation Bible School

VBS crafts are in need of a few items: we are collecting empty ½ gallon paper milk cartonsand empty 16 oz water bottles. There will be a VBS box in the narthex for these items.

Sandwich Generation Support Group

Are you helping in the care of your parents or elderly relatives and children or grandchildren? Then you are in the Sandwich Generation. Plan to join us at our next meeting on July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Please call Becky White if you have questions.

Godly Play Group at Peace

The Godly Play Group at Peace is for young children and their parents to enjoy free playtime and fellowship in Christ. It is geared for infants to 5 years old, but siblings are always welcome. What we do… usually we begin with free play time, have story and song time with David Booher then close with a coloring/art activity. We then move to the Fellowship Hall for prayer and lunch. (Bring a sack lunch.) This is a loosely structured play group where parents participate in play with their children. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. If you have any questions please contact Alycia at (281) 478-6070. We hope that you’ll join us on July 28th, and bring a friend!
