Sunday's Sermon
This Sunday we will be hearing about John the Baptist and his question sent to Jesus, "Are you the one, or shall we look for another." John was struggling in prison with his life soon to be taken. He wanted to know. Jesus, in the story, points him to the signs of God's kingdom being near.

My sermon is about how we struggle with disappointment, yet if we open our eyes the signs of God's kingdom is all around us. I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to use new liturgies during advent. 8:30 will are using “Mass of Creation", 9:45 is setting 4, 11:00 is setting 10 (this setting uses familiar hymns to sing the liturgy.) We will also be using the contemporary translation of the Lord's Prayer at 8:30 and 11:00. The reason for these changes is for us to keep ourselves from falling into a rut in worship. The worship of God is wonderful because of the many creative options liturgies can give us. Yet the basic pattern of worship remains: Gathering, Word, Meal, and Sending.

The Meaning of Advent:
Advent is a wonderful season of the church year. It is the season of hope and the power of waiting for God's reign to come. We capture these themes in our lighting of one additional candle each Sunday and the slow decoration of our Christmas tree. Also we use the color blue and invite people to wear blue on Sunday.

Other News.................

From The Youth Director
May God bless you brothers and sisters on this cool day! I hope all of your Christmas preparations are going well. I just wanted to take this time to thank all of our Sunday School teachers, parents, volunteers, parish life, and our youth for putting on this Christmas production. I know it would not have happened without the help of everyone! I really do not have that much to say this week. We had a great turn out for our Movie Night of Narnia: Prince Caspian. And I posed a question that night that I would like everyone to ponder this week: How is God speaking to you this week?

Take care, everyone, and May God bless you during this time in Advent!

Sincerely,
Ben Remmert, Dir. of Youth and Family Ministry

Women of Peace Advent Card
Each year the Women of Peace provide us with an Advent Card. In lieu of sending Christmas cards to everyone in our congregation, we combine our money toward a special project. The 2010 Advent Card can be found on the table in the narthex through December 12th. Please use the blue envelopes for your contributions. (Make your checks payable to the Women of Peace.) You may place your envelope in the weekly collection plate. This year the money collected will go to Sarah's House. The Advent Card is published and available at our Christmas Eve Services. If you have any questions, please contact Carol Young.

Lutheran World Relief Stamp Program
The Christmas Holidays are approaching rapidly and many of you will be sending and receiving Christmas cards. Please remember to save and turn in your cancelled postage stamps. Proceeds from the sale of these stamps to collectors helps to defer shipping costs for Health, School, & Layette Kits, as well as Quilts. Look for the basket in the Narthex marked World Relief to turn in your stamps.

LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project
The midweek Bible Study group is a “partner” in the coffee business and sells coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix through the Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in our congregation and homes, we are helping farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors. Look for the table in the narthex today.

Volunteers Needed
We need readers for the 3 Christmas Eve services. If you can help out, please contact Monica Clark.

Church Pictorial Directory
The current pictorial directory we are using is several years old, and we are going to start working on a new directory. To accomplish this, we need your help in getting your family’s picture taken. We are starting to make appointments for these pictures now. The picture dates are January 5th through January 8th and January 19th through January 22nd. Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex on Sunday.

Poinsettias
If you would like to donate a poinsettia plant to place in the church for Christmas Eve, please sign the sheet in the narthex. We ask that you bring your plant to the church during the week of December 19th. You may take your plants home on December 26th. Any questions please call Pam Cronan at (713) 492-2811.

“Wish Stones”
We have compiled a list of the "Wish Stones" turned in during the October Stewardship Campaign. Copies are available in the Narthex for members who wish to pray for the ministries of Peace Lutheran and its members in the coming year. Thank you for your contributions!

Don’t Forget Your New Years Plans
If you haven’t made your New Years Eve plans yet, why not plan on joining us! We will go out to eat at Pepper’s Beef & Seafood, 3604 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, at 5:00 pm, and then return to the church at 7:00 pm for an evening of games. At midnight we will ring in the new year with a glass of non-alcoholic bubbly. If you are going to join us please be sure to sign up on the sheet in the narthex. “Blue Christmas” Service
Is this Christmas season a difficult one for you? You are not alone – join is for a quite, reflective service for solace and strength.

Christmas time can be a very lonely, depressing, “blue” time for those grieving the loss of loved ones, and loss of a job, health or other losses. It may be “blue” for those who are all alone when others are celebrating and gathering with family members. Many people feel out of step with what society demands at this time of year. Then there are those years in our lives when we hurt during the Christmas season and just can’t get into the traditional festivities.

It is at such a time that we need to make the space and take the time to acknowledge our sadness and concern.

If someone you know finds Christmas a difficult time, Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church invites you to attend a Blue Christmas Service on December 21st at 7:00 p.m. Join together as Pastor Tart guides us through words of healing, prayers and comfort and Ms. Martha Diggs leads us in songs of solace. This service will be hopeful as we find comfort in our faith in the God who understands and shepherds us through all of life. This service is open to everyone regardless of religious affiliation.

The service is on the shortest day of the year when our spirits sink, as days grow shorter. We feel darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us and know that we are not alone and the emphasis that we must journey through the night on our way to the light of a new day.

Light refreshments and fellowship will follow the service. Please accept this invitation to be with us, to experience the hope that is Christmas. The doors will be open to all. Feel free to invite others to come with you as your support, or if you know that they, too are hurting at Christmas.

We hope you join us and if you have any questions, please contact Bernie Anderson or Judy Griffin at the Church 281-487-1635.

Peace to you all,
Bernie Anderson

Sunday's Sermon
We continue our advent journey this Sunday with the introduction of John the Baptist and his message of repentance. Repentance means "turn" and the title of my sermon is the "The Great Turn". I will be preaching about the Gospel's call to turn toward God's future. This is the great challenge of faith. We need to constantly turn toward God's future of peace and harmony. How in your life do you need to turn from that is harmful and toward that which is life giving?

We continue to use new liturgies during advent. 8:30 will be using “Mass of Creation", 9:45 is setting 4, 11:00 is setting 10 (this setting uses familiar hymns to sing the liturgy.) We will also be using the contemporary translation of the Lord's Prayer at 8:30 and 11:00. The reason for these changes is for us to keep ourselves from falling into a rut in worship. The worship of God is wonderful because of the many creative options liturgies can give us. Yet the basic pattern of worship remains: Gathering, Word, Meal, and Sending.

Our annual meeting will be after the 11:00 service. Elections will be in June as per our new by-law changes.

Agenda:
Opening Prayer
Treasurer's Report
2011 Budget Approval
Approval of Nominating and Audit Committees
Reports of Pastor, President, Directors, Organizational Chairs,
Other Motions from the floor.
Adjournment with the Lord's Prayer

Pastor Report, Director Reports and 2011 Budget are on the table in the narthex this Sunday.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words to our college student cards! I know they will appreciate your words of encouragement. As the holidays are getting closer, I want to remind everyone to make sure that they take the time during the day to rest and relax from the busy day.

I also wanted to take this time to let everyone know that our Lutherhill summer schedule is up on the Youth and Family Bulletin board. For our elementary students, we are planning on going to Lutherhill August 7th- August 12th and for Jr. High, we will go on June 19th-24th. If you are planning on going to Lutherhill this summer, we need you to sign up as soon as possible. Spots fill up fast!

This Sundays Events

Sunday's Sermon
This Sunday we hear Jesus tell us that the Christian life is not a walk through the park. We will experience hardship for what we believe, yet not one hair on our head will perish and by our endurance we will gain our souls. What is at stake in our suffering are our souls. We fight not to overcome all suffering, which is an impossibility, but to stay true to our faith and our identity as children of God. The gaining of our souls is being true to who we are. I hope you will enjoy the sermon.

This Sunday we will have a bake potato fundraiser to raise money for the labyrinth and we will also be selling Fair Trade coffee and tea.

From The Youth Director
I cannot thank you enough for giving me the opportunity to give the sermon last week. However, I do not want you to forget the question I proposed in the sermon, are you ready for Sainthood? We all know of our own saints in our lives that inspire us, but never forget that you are saints. Never forget that it is through your Baptism, you are given a clean heart and through communion we are fed when we are hungry, and through our community we are uplifted in the message of Jesus Christ, so take this message to the streets and tell your neighbor about the promises and blessings that Christ has given us.

God Bless,
Ben Remmert, Dir. of Youth and Family Ministry

From The Youth Director
A huge thank you to our volunteers and our confirmation students for the success of our Reformation Day Celebration! Our celebration was a huge success, and I could not be happier with the service that our confirmation students and volunteers did for our youth and families here at Peace. Thank you. We are going to leave up the 95 Theses on the doors of the church and the Martin Luther Timeline (for a few weeks) so that we can all remember our proud Lutheran heritage.

This Sunday is All Saints Sunday, and there is so much that I can say about this day, but I am giving our sermon so I will not go into detail. However, I want this week for us to take some time to remember our loved ones who lived their Baptismal calling. Happy All Saints Day!

Remember that our Young Adults Chillin events are being held on Wednesdays from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm, and our Senior High Youth Group meets on Sundays from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm. Mark your calendars. We are going to try and see if this helps with schedules for our youth. If you have any questions you can contact me.

God Bless,
Ben Remmert, Dir. of Youth and Family Ministry

Loss Is Part of Being Alive: A New Class On Grief Recognition and Response
This new class, led by Carole Martin, begins on November 7th during the Sunday School hour in classroom 201 upstairs.

Loss and grief are a universal experience and bad things do happen to good people of all ages. Death is not the only loss that causes us to grieve. Many problems in our lives stem from grief unresolved and unhealed. When we do not recognize and work through our grief we lose an opportunity to heal our soul and heart, and to be a help to others who walk these paths. Areas that will be covered are:

• Bible’s response to grief and loss
• Ways Religion helps
• Ways Religion hurts
• Faces of grief
• Recognizing different types of grief
• Stages of grief
• What to say and what not to say when a person is grieving
• Healthy and unhealthy grief
• What can hinder recovery
• Satan is an opportunist
• The transition process
• Four key facts about grief
• How to handle holidays and special occasions
• Paths to healing
• Growing through loss
