This Sundays Events
We will have our annual Sunday School Rally day and end of the summer celebration. Wear summer casual clothing and bring your mementos from the summer to share.
We will be kicking off our Sunday School program and commissioning our Sunday School teachers and staff. The students will meet their new teachers.
We will also be celebrating the end of the summer and ask everyone to wear summer casual clothes, (t-shirts and sandals are permitted), and to bring pictures or some item that symbolizes something fun you did this summer. We will have tables in the fellowship hall for you to display your stuff. You can make a poster or have pictures or items with a piece of paper with your name and explanation next to them. We are doing this to foster community in our congregation and to get to know each other better.
We will have a continental breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8-11
The sermon this Sunday is about "God's Great Banquet", and will focus on God's vision for us to be a community based on humility. This humility leads to a community of great hospitality, joy and peace. I hope that you will enjoy it.
We will also be dedicating our new playground and thanking all those who donated to make it possible. We still have some administrative tasks left to do: rules and a special way to remember children who now live in God's great kingdom. If you would like to help with this, contact Pastor Tart.
Council Leadership is also meeting that afternoon to
• Approve repairs to our air conditioning unit in the Education Building and other smaller building and grounds issues
• Discuss and perhaps charter a re-visioning process for our congregation
• Discuss the ELCA discontent in our congregation and devise a strategy for managing this discontent.
• Review Sept. 12 Congregation Meeting agenda and presentations
• Vote on Peace's participation in a Saturday Sept. 11 Synod wide leadership gathering at Zion Lutheran in Houston Fall Leadership Gathering
• Hear a report and any recommendation from Personnel and Policy about the hiring of a new director and administration.
• Hear reports from Pastor, Director of Youth and Family, Finance and Membership
We will also have our confirmation program at 6:00 pm. We are off to a great start with some wonderful students and leaders. This program is for 6-8 graders and we have an open enrollment policy. Never to late to join us!
On Sunday, Sept 12 at the 11:00 am service we will enroll the class and commission the leaders. Please keep these young people and leaders in your prayers.
Congregation Meeting: September 12 Following the 11:00 am Service
We will have a meeting to review our financial situation, vote on a proposed by-law change to switch the election cycle for council members and officers from January to September so that the new council members can be part of the visioning of the next year's ministry and mission planning. We will also have a report from our survey and give members an opportunity to share feedback. Subjects: Worship and Music, Outreach, Education, Council Communication, Pastoral Leadership, Programs.
We hope to have a very productive meeting. We plan to be done by 1:30. We need at least 59 people to have a quorum so please take this meeting seriously and plan to stay.
Journeying Faithfully Together: Human Sexuality and the ELCA
It has been a year since our church voted to allow a congregation to call a minister who is in a same sex publicly accountable relationships. I know that people in our congregation and community have some lingering resentments because of this decision and think that the ELCA is losing a moral compass. I have heard this and I totally respect a person's right to have and share their feelings, opinions and thoughts. I don't think someone else has to be wrong in order for me to be right. I, however, hope and pray that our community will stay focused not on laws of conduct, but on the bigger question of how we might lift the burdens of others and invite them to live lives of dignity and grace. Say what you will about this decision, but it is obvious to me that allowing such ministers is lifting a burden off those who for many years struggled with accepting who they are and loving who they want. The decision is allowing congregations that dearly love their minister the freedom for him or her to serve them with the good gifts of the Gospel.
I am very saddened by those who seek to disassociate over this decision or any policy or social statement of the church. I think such a decision to separate or not support helps no one to grow. Thus, on Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00 pm I am inviting all who struggle with this issue to come to Peace and join in a 10 week study of human sexuality that will include study of homosexuality and the ELCA policy. The approach to such issues is not polarization, but study, prayer, reflection and open minded dialog.

We are asking everyone to wear what they wear to work on this Sunday as we celebrate our vocations as God's calling in our lives. We will also be inviting you to share what you do in a presentation we are presenting. It is always fun to see the kind of work our people do.

We are asking everyone to wear or bring something that shows their favorite college. We will be praying for our college students that day and blessing care packages that we will send them.

From the Youth Director
Congratulations families, you survived the first week of school! This is often a very exciting time as you are meeting new people, new teachers, and getting bogged down with homework. This is also a time for our athletes as they begin their first games. So my question to my parents is this, how is the transition from summer to school year? Students, how are you spending your time with your family? I remember my times in school when I would barely see my parents throughout the week with all the school activities and my parents working. So this week, I challenge you to see how much time with your family you get to spend after school and work.
Just as Pastor David said in his last sermon, know that Jesus is here to uplift our burdens. So as the school year continues and work becomes more difficult, remember that Jesus gives us the gift of new life, forgiveness, and healing. Take care this week and I look forward to hearing your first day of school stories for the next couple of weeks.
C.R.O.P. Walk 2010
WE NEED SOME VOLUNTEERS! First Presbyterian asked us for some walkers (1K-10K) so that we can raise money for Pasadena Community Ministry and Church World service to fight hunger poverty at home and around the world. We will be walking at Rotary Pavilion Crenshaw Park on Sunday October 10th at 1:30 pm. This is a large community effort in Pasadena and I would love to make this our big family service event for the fall. I So if your interested, please contact me or sign up on our sign-in sheet in the narthex.

Did you miss our parent and student orientation? Its okay, if you have a youth that is in 6th-8th grade you can still register your youth to be apart of our program this year as our first class will be on August 22nd we will begin our time together exploring our Christian heritage and learning how to proclaim the Christian faith by learning about the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, and the life of Martin Luther through songs, worship, prayer, and interactive activities (because we know you get lectured too much already at schools and work). We are also going to officially recognize our new confirmands on September 12th in our worship services, so be there confirmands!
Young Adult Chillin’
Calling all young adults! Do you need a time where you can leave your worries from school and work to relax, sit, get some great food, and have a great time for fellowship? Then you should come to our “Chillin” events where we meet at Starbucks on Fairmont Parkway at 7:30 pm where we have time to catch up on the week and decide together as a group on the activity for the night. Check out our church bulletin, youth board, or our facebook page for more information!
Sr. High and Jr. High Youth Group
Summer is only just a few more weeks longer and how many times can you watch the same movie or play the same video game. Why not come to our Jr. High and Sr. High to our youth groups where we will have fun fellowship while trying to stay cool in the Houston heat. For Jr. High youth group, we will meet at Peace Lutheran Church at 5 pm - 6 pm (dates below) right before Confirmation (Begins August 15th) and Sr. High we will meet on Wednesdays at 7:00- 8:30pm! For sr. high, I encourage you to bring an item that we can snack on as we do our fellowship together. There will be more announcements and information on the youth board, church bulletin, and our facebook page! Here are the dates of this summer’s activities.
Tuesday Peace Family Night
Thank you for those families that have already talked to me about a time to meet, but for those that have not, there is still time! I have placed a sign up sheet on our youth bulletin for families to sign up what day and time you would like to schedule a meal together where we can bond together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. However you do have the choice of deny the invitation. This can be a home meal or out to eat, I will leave that up to you. I look forward to meeting everyone in our community.

First Communion Classes
SIGN UPS ARE ON THE YOUTH BULLETIN BOARD! All students ready for instruction in First Communion (we suggest 3rd grade or higher) are invited to attend classes every Sunday at 1pm on September 19, 26, and October 2. We will bake bread on Saturday, October 2 at the church kitchen at 10 am, and the children will receive their first Communion on October 3, Reformation Sunday at the service their families normally attend. Please contact Ben Remmert or sign up on the youth and family board.
College Recognition Sunday- Sept. 12th
On September 12th, we are going to recognize and pray for all our college students at all three of our worships. In the narthex, we will set up a table where you can prepare a college kit that we are going to send to our college students so that they we are keeping them in our prayers! So if you know any of our members that are college students, please contact Ben Remmert for their address!
Milestone Ministry- Worship and Church Calendar (4-5 year olds)
Research from the youth and family institute has discovered that spiritual healthy families practice their faith outside of the church. So we are going to celebrate milestones that our children and youth go through in their lives. On September 19th, I invite all the 4-5 year olds and their families at 9:45 am as I teach about worship and the church calendar. On September 26th, we will recognize our families and offer them a reminder of their milestone. So if you’re interested, please contact Ben Remmert.
Co-ed Softball and Volleyball
Softball registration is until August 31 with the City of Pasadena and league play begins September. Co-Ed Indoor Volleyball will be at First Baptist Church on Fairmont beginning in October. Come Sing With The Choir of Peace
Our 9:45 choir is now known as “The Choir of Peace.” We are the Choir of Peace because we belong to Peace Lutheran, but also we experience the peace that passes all understanding as we work together in our practices and enjoy Christian fellowship. Our practice room is a stress-free zone where you can enjoy singing and sharing your faith journey with others.
Rehearsals resume today at 8:30 a.m. While the music we sing this year will be easier to learn, we always remain committed to offering the best music in worship in a variety of styles. If you love singing, we really need you in choir. No auditions are required, and we have a great time! Please prayerfully consider making the commitment to a one hour weekly rehearsal and one weekly service, all on Sunday morning – a day we have found has fewer schedule conflicts. We need you! Midweek Bible Study: Wednesday Morning Study, led by Pastor Tart, will resume with our study of other religions on September 1 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Everyone is welcome!
What Is a Lutheran? An Eight-Week Study of The Lutheran Confessions: Ever wonder what makes a Lutheran a Lutheran? This study of key Lutheran beliefs and practices will use the Book of Concord and the 2003 movie Luther as resources. Taught by Pastor Gary Morgan-Gohlke, this class for adults will meet for eight Wednesdays in September and October at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs conference room beginning on September 8th. You don’t have to be Lutheran to attend. Feel free to bring a friend or neighbor. If you are interested, sign up on the sheet on the narthex table.
“Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Lives”: This new Bible study, led by Joann Hutton, will begin September 12th during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 am - 10:45 am. We will meet in Room 201, the classroom upstairs near the conference room. (A copy of the study is found by the sign-up sheet on the narthex table.) This 14 chapter study should help us to remember that nobody is insignificant, that God pays attention to us, and God loves us dearly.
A Study of the Books of the Bible: This Bible Study, led by Geri Warren, meets on Sunday mornings in the upstairs conference room.
“1001 Surprising Things You Should Know About the Bible”: Pam Cronan leads this class in Room 202-203 (upstairs) beginning August 29th.
Weekly Christian Fellowship & Bible Study: Come meet the man whose psalms have often become your prayers. Follow his fervent pursuit of God as a shepherd boy, warrior, and king. And learn from his life about the grace that can transform every sinner into a person after God’s own heart. We will be using Chuck Swindoll’s CD study series, David, A Man of Passion and Destiny.

PCM Food Drive Next Sunday
Don’t forget your non-perishable food donations on September 5th for our monthly drive for Pasadena Community Ministries. Of course, monetary gifts are also accepted. Please make your check payable to Peace Lutheran Church and write “PCM” in the memo section. Thank you.
We were blessed this month with the donations that we collected for the PCM with both food and clothing donations. We did a great job with Sunday Undies on the Undie Sunday Collection Sundays.
DUE TO THE NEED .....We will continue putting a special emphasis on collecting UNDIES through the 2nd Sunday of September. There is still a great need for school uniforms for Pasadena and Deer Park schools. All types and sizes of clothing will also continue to be collected so Don't throw away-- DONATE.

Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, and will not be sold at the door, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth.

A labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation, a crucible of change, a watering hole for the spirit and a mirror of the soul.
Women of Peace General Meeting
Attention women of the congregation! Invite a friend and make plans now to join us for our General Meeting and election of 2011 officers on Sunday, September 12 at 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. As part of the entertainment, we are asking each lady who attends to bring one of your nighties in an unmarked brown paper bag. Then we’ll try and guess who the nightie belongs to. Creative Hands
We met this past month and made beautiful bracelets for the Bazaar. We had a small turn out but we were a busy bunch and we are pleased with the finished products. We are not scheduling a Creative Hands work day/night until after the Bazaar 2010. We know that everyone is busy finishing up their crafts for the bazaar. We will do cards for our special members in October.
For future classes/workshops we are collecting:
-Beads, charms and memory wire and other jewelry makings
-Corks
-Roller Balls from roll on deodorants (or the empty container)
-Artificial carnations and small mums in fall and Christmas colors
-Plastic storage containers shoebox and sweater sizes

Convention News
The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM. “Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. Forms are on two tables in the Narthex under the gifts. For more information, see Mavis, Jeanene, Virginia, Marilyn Seich or me. Plan now to come out to support your friends AND have a good time. This Sundays Events
This Sunday we will read the wonderful story of Jesus healing the bent over woman on the Sabbath. The story is rich with this image of the Gospel, the good news of God's reign, as the healing force that lifts us up. Many people live in "bent over" lives- discouragement, bitterness, resentments, anger, depression, physical and financial problems can make us bend over under their burdens. The Gospel is that in Jesus God gets under our burdens to lift us up. We find a God in Jesus that does not want us to live with our heads down, but with our heads up. He wants us to anticipate the joy of his saving help and give to him our burdens so that we can live in the newness and freedom of his grace and power.
He also calls us to help those burdened by reaching out with a helping hand. He wants our community to be in the lifting of burdens and not the giving of burdens. The Pharisees in the story could not see this. They criticize Jesus for healing on the sabbath, the day of rest. They were so bent over with their legalism that they could not see this Gospel in front of them.
We need to remember that Jesus came to lift burdens and not to add to them with new laws and new pieties. He did not come to make sure everyone was keeping sabbath. No, he came to free people with his grace and love and to invite us to see each other in new ways.

We will be thanking and lifting up in prayer all educators and students at all three services. We will also be blessing backpacks at 8:30 and 11:00. We will also be celebrating all kindergartners as they begin their education with special recognition and gifts.

Dedication of Playground
Yes, it is finally totally finished and paid for within budget. (The contractor ran into a problem, but he kept his word and made it happen as we agreed.) It is beautiful and we will have a special dedication on Sunday, August 29th as part of our end of summer celebration.
We are still working on a few aspects of the playground - rules, some benches, a fence and a special dedication marker. If you would like to be involved, join the Google group on our website.

School is just about here and summer vacation is about to come to an end. This time of year is always very busy for students as they are finishing their summer reading and projects, for parents as they go out to shop for their children’s school supplies, and us here to start the academic year to go off with a bang. But we need to take some time to slow down and realize that with all the errands we have to get done, that God is with us.
It is God that gives us comfort when we are stressed. So I challenge you sometime this week to take some time to get away from “back to school” stresses and know that God is always with you. Take care this week and I look forward to the beginning of our confirmation program and continue to spread the message of God’s love for all our brothers and sisters.

C.R.O.P. Walk 2010
First Presbyterian asked us for some walkers (1K-10K) so that we can raise money for Pasadena Community Ministry and Church World service to fight hunger poverty at home and around the world. We will be walking at Rotary Pavilion Crenshaw Park on Sunday October 10th at 1:30 pm. This is a large community effort in Pasadena and I would love to make this our big family service event for the fall. Did you miss our parent and student orientation? Its okay, if you have a youth that is in 6th-8th grade you can still register your youth to be apart of our program this year as our first class will be on August 22nd we will begin our time together exploring our Christian heritage and learning how to proclaim the Christian faith by learning about the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, and the life of Martin Luther through songs, worship, prayer, and interactive activities (because we know you get lectured too much already at schools and work).
Young Adult Chillin’
Calling all young adults ages 18-26 years old! Do you need a time where you can leave your worries from school and work to relax, sit, get some great food, and have a great time for fellowship? Then you should come to our “Chillin” events where we meet at Starbucks on Fairmont Parkway on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm where we have time to catch up on the week and decide together as a group on the activity for the night. Sr. High and Jr. High Youth Group
Summer is only just a few more weeks longer and how many times can you watch the same movie or play the same video game. Why not come to our Jr. High and Sr. High youth groups where we will have fun fellowship while trying to stay cool in the Houston heat. For Jr. High youth group, we will meet at Peace Lutheran Church at 5 pm - 6 pm (dates below) right before Confirmation (Begins August 15th) and Sr. High we will meet on Wednesdays at 7:00- 8:30pm. For Sr. high, I encourage you to bring an item that we can snack on as we do our fellowship together. Tuesday Peace Family Night
Thank you for those families that have already talked to me about a time to meet, but for those that have not, there is still time! I have placed a sign up sheet on our youth bulletin for families to sign up what day and time you would like to schedule a meal together where we can bond together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. However you do have the choice to deny the invitation. This can be a home meal or out to eat, I will leave that up to you. I look forward to meeting everyone in our community.

First Communion Classes
All students ready for instruction in First Communion (we suggest 3rd grade or higher) are invited to attend classes every Sunday at 1pm on September 19, 26, and October 2. We will bake bread on Saturday, October 2 at the church kitchen at 10 am, and the children will receive their first Communion on October 3, Reformation Sunday at the service their families normally attend. Blessing our Students, Teachers and Backpacks Today!
Today at all three services we are blessing our students as they begin another milestone in their lives and we will also bless our teachers who continue to nurture and guide our children and youth in their education of the world and of their faith. We want to acknowledge our kindergartners as they begin their first days at school, If you missed out, we will have our gifts for you at our summer celebration next Sunday!

Wednesday Morning Bible Study Resumes

Come Sing With the Choir of Peace
Our 9:45 choir is now known as “The Choir of Peace.” We are the Choir of Peace because we belong to Peace Lutheran, but also we experience the peace that passes all understanding as we work together in our practices and enjoy Christian fellowship. Our practice room is a stress-free zone where you can enjoy singing and sharing your faith journey with others.
We will be resuming rehearsals on Rally Day, August 29 at 8:30 a.m. While the music we sing this year will be easier to learn, we always remain committed to offering the best music in worship in a variety of styles. Last year, we lost several key choir leaders who have serious vocal health issues. If you love singing, we really need you in choir. Please prayerfully consider making the commitment to a one hour weekly rehearsal and one weekly service, all on Sunday morning – a day we have found has fewer schedule conflicts. We need you! Pasadena Community Ministries
We were blessed this month with the donations that we collected for the PCM with both food and clothing donations. We did a great job with Sunday Undies on the Undie Sunday Collection Sundays.
DUE TO THE NEED .....We will continue putting a special emphasis on collecting UNDIES through the 2nd Sunday of September. There is still a great need for school uniforms for Pasadena and Deer Park schools. All types and sizes of clothing will also continue to be collected so Don't throw away-- DONATE. The clothing donation boxes are located under the large table in the narthex. The Food donations go in the hallway between the narthex and fellowship hall. (Cereals, peanut butter, jelly and all canned/packaged goods are greatly needed.)
LOOKING FOR: Bob and I have a TV we are donating to a deserving volunteer at the PCM. The person does not have cable or satellite so a Digital Converter Box is needed. If you have an extra converter that you are willing to donate please let Bob or my self know. Jany Reeves
Sunday School Mission Project
As a mission project we are encouraging our youth to bring school supplies for Haiti. The Women’s group at Peace supports many charitable organizations and we wanted to take this opportunity to get our youth involved in this important mission project. Boxes will be available in the narthex and Sunday School opening room for children to place the supplies in. We encourage all children to bring an item and support this charity. We will collect supplies until Sunday, September 13. Please bring one of the following items: pencils, spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners. Thanks again for your support in this important project.

Sarah's House is a shelter for women who are in crisis and their children, and is located at 2210 Wichita, Pasadena, TX. These women have lost their jobs and can't afford housing. Many have been sleeping in their cars. Please consider making a donation of any of the following items:

Fiesta Dinner Party Peace Lutheran Church Tuesday, September 14, 2010 6:30 P.M.
Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth.

What Is A Lutheran? An Eight-Week Study of the Lutheran Confessions
Ever wonder what makes a Lutheran a Lutheran? This study of key Lutheran beliefs and practices will use the Book of Concord and the 2003 movie Luther as resources. Taught by Pastor Gary Morgan-Gohlke, this class for adults will meet for eight Wednesdays in September and October at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs conference room beginning on September 8th. You don’t have to be Lutheran to attend. Feel free to bring a friend or neighbor. If you are interested, sign up on the sheet on the narthex table.
Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Lives
This new Bible study will begin September 12th during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 am - 10:45 am. We will meet in Room 201, the classroom upstairs near the conference room. (A copy of the study is found by the sign-up sheet on the narthex table.) This 14 chapter study should help us to remember that nobody is insignificant, that God pays attention to us, and God loves us dearly.

Convention News
The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM. “Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. This Sundays Events
This Sunday we will read the wonderful story of Jesus healing the bent over woman on the Sabbath. The story is rich with this image of the Gospel, the good news of God's reign, as the healing force that lifts us up. Many people live in "bent over" lives- discouragement, bitterness, resentments, anger, depression, physical and financial problems can make us bend over under their burdens. The Gospel is that in Jesus God gets under our burdens to lift us up. We find a God in Jesus that does not want us to live with our heads down, but with our heads up. He wants us to anticipate the joy of his saving help and give to him our burdens so that we can live in the newness and freedom of his grace and power.
He also calls us to help those burdened by reaching out with a helping hand. He wants our community to be in the lifting of burdens and not the giving of burdens. The Pharisees in the story could not see this. They criticize Jesus for healing on the sabbath, the day of rest. They were so bent over with their legalism that they could not see this Gospel in front of them.
We need to remember that Jesus came to lift burdens and not to add to them with new laws and new pieties. He did not come to make sure everyone was keeping sabbath. No, he came to free people with his grace and love and to invite us to see each other in new ways.
It has been a year since our church voted to allow a congregation to call a minister who is in a same sex publicly accountable relationships. I know that people in our congregation and community have some lingering resentments because of this decision and think that the ELCA is losing a moral compass. I have heard this and I totally respect a person's right to have and share their feelings, opinions and thoughts. I don't think someone else has to be wrong in order for me to be right. I, however, hope and pray that our community will stay focused not on laws of conduct, but on the bigger question of how we might lift the burdens of others and invite them to live lives of dignity and grace. Say what you will about this decision, but it is obvious to me that allowing such ministers is lifting a burden off those who for many years struggled with accepting who they are and loving who they want. The decision is allowing congregations that dearly love their minister the freedom for him or her to serve them with the good gifts of the Gospel.
I am very saddened by those who seek to disassociate over this decision or any policy or social statement of the church. I think such a decision to separate or not support helps no one to grow. Thus, on Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00 pm I am inviting all who struggle with this issue to come to Peace and join in a 10 week study of human sexuality that will include study of homosexuality and the ELCA policy. The approach to such issues is not polarization, but study, prayer, reflection and open minded dialog.
The “Joyful Noise Praise Team & Nickel Strings" from Highlands United Methodist Church will present a concert of southern gospel songs and old church hymns at 4:00pm to 6:30pm here at Peace Lutheran Church. We will be thanking and lifting up in prayer all educators and students at all three services. We will also be blessing backpacks at 8:30 and 11:00. We will also be celebrating all kindergartners as they begin their education with special recognition and gifts.
We ask all students to bring their backpacks. We will have a little token to make sure you remember to take your faith with you as you go to class.
We will also be having an inquiry luncheon for all those interested in Peace at 12:30 in the fellowship hall. Anyone interested in discovering more about Peace or wanting to join is welcome.
Dedication of Playground
Yes, it is finally totally finished and paid for within budget. (The contractor ran into a problem, but he kept his word and made it happen as we agreed.) It is beautiful and we will have a special dedication on Sunday, August 29th as part of our end of summer celebration.
We are still working on a few aspects of the playground - rules, some benches, a fence and a special dedication marker. If you would like to be involved, join the Google group on our website.
Three Great Sundays of Fun
The next three Sundays we are going to have some fun and, at the same time, bless and celebrate the people and ministries of Peace. Each Sunday will have a different theme and event so pay attention and join in the activities.
Sunday, August 29, Sunday School Rally Day and End of the Summer Celebration. Wear summer casual clothing and bring your mementos from the summer to share.
We will be kicking off our Sunday School program and commissioning our Sunday School teachers and staff. The students will meet their new teachers.
We will also be celebrating the end of the summer and ask everyone to wear summer casual clothes, (t-shirts and sandals are permitted), and to bring pictures or some item that symbolizes something fun you did this summer. We will have tables in the fellowship hall for you to display your stuff. You can make a poster or have pictures or items with a piece of paper with your name and explanation next to them. We are doing this to foster community in our congregation and to get to know each other better. We will have a continental breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8-11.

Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth.

What Is A Lutheran? An Eight-Week Study of the Lutheran Confessions
Ever wonder what makes a Lutheran a Lutheran? This study of key Lutheran beliefs and practices will use the Book of Concord and the 2003 movie Luther as resources. Taught by Pastor Gary Morgan-Gohlke, this class for adults will meet for eight Wednesdays in September and October at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs conference room beginning on September 8th. You don’t have to be Lutheran to attend. Feel free to bring a friend or neighbor. If you are interested, sign up on the sheet on the narthex table.
Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Lives
This new Bible study will begin September 12th during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 am - 10:45 am. We will meet in Room 201, the classroom upstairs near the conference room. (A copy of the study is found by the sign-up sheet on the narthex table.) This 14 chapter study should help us to remember that nobody is insignificant, that God pays attention to us, and God loves us dearly.

The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM. “Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. This Sundays Events
We pause in our journey through year C of our lectionary readings to celebrate Mary, the bearer of the savior of the world. We stop to listen to her song and join our voices to this radical vision of God turning the world upside down. The mighty will be brought low and the lowly will be lifted. The hungry will be filled with good things and the rich will be left empty. These words remind us of our vision of who we are: a community where everyone is treasured, where everyone is valued, where no one longs to be fed and no one gloats over their status. We gather as the community of the baptized where there is unity of faith and love. The title of my sermon is "Singing Mary's Song" and will be about our common vision and life together.
This Sunday we will also meet Rev. Jan Menky, Pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (Lutheran) in Michalovce, Slovakia. He will be sharing a greeting at worship and visiting our adult Sunday School classes and talk briefly about church life in Slovakia.
This Sunday we will also have blood pressure screening. We thank our nurses who provide this service to our congregation. The screening will take place in the library.
This Sunday we will be restarting our confirmation program with a parent-student orientation at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall. This program is for all 6-8 graders. We will be reviewing our year and our program. We will be introducing a new curriculum. Both Ben and myself will be leading and teaching.
I have been spending this week with 5 of our elementary age kids at Camp Lutherhill. We have had a fantastic, although hot at times, week. So many wonderful experiences happen for kids at camp, emotionally and spiritually. On the Aug. 29 we will be sharing all the pictures and videos.

Four Great Sundays of Fun
We are going to have four Sundays of having some fun and at the same time blessing and celebrating the people and ministries of Peace. Each Sunday will have a different theme and event so pay attention and join in the activities.
Sunday, August 22, Back to Public and Private School Sunday.
We will be thanking and lifting up in prayer all teachers, students and staff at all three services. We will also be blessing backpacks at 8:30 and 11:00. We will also be celebrating all kindergartners as they begin their education with special recognition and gifts.
We ask all students to bring their backpacks. We will have a little token to make sure you remember to take your faith with you as you go to class.
Sunday, August 29, Sunday School Rally day and end of the summer celebration. Wear summer casual clothing and bring your mementos from the summer to share.
We will be kicking off our Sunday School program and commissioning our Sunday School teachers and staff. The students will meet their new teachers. We will also be celebrating the end of the summer and ask everyone to wear summer casual clothes, (t-shirts and sandals are permitted), and to bring pictures or some item that symbolizes something fun you did this summer. We will have tables in the fellowship hall for you to display your stuff. You can make a poster or have pictures or items with a piece of paper with your name and explanation next to them. We are doing this to foster community in our congregation and to get to know each other better.
We will have a continental breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8-11.

We are asking everyone to wear what they wear to work on this Sunday as we celebrate our vocations as God's calling in our lives. We will also be inviting you to share what you do in a presentation we are presenting. It is always fun to see the kind of work our people do.

We are asking everyone to wear or bring something that shows their favorite college. We will be praying for our college students that day and blessing care packages that we will send them.

From the Youth Director
I would like to thank those who attended the youth and family ministry workshops over at IHOP the last couple of weeks. I am excited as I have taken everything that we discussed and implemented it into our youth and family ministry program this coming year. If you have any other comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
I attended the CROP walk meeting last week and First Presbyterian asked us for some walkers (1K-10K) so that we can raise money for Pasadena Community Ministry and Church World service to fight hunger poverty at home and around the world. We will be walking at Rotary Pavilion Crenshaw Park on Sunday, October 10th at 1:30 pm. This is a large community effort in Pasadena and I would love to make this our big family service event for the fall. I would love for us to come out in big numbers so please contact me if you are interested!
I can’t thank everyone enough, as it has already been two months here and look how God has worked through our ministry together.

Confirmation 2010-2011
It’s coming sooner than you think. Beginning tonight, we will have our parent and student orientation to share our dream for our confirmation program and what to expect this year! This year we are going to learn about the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, and the life of Martin Luther through songs, worship, prayer, and interactive activities (because we know you get lectured too much already at schools and work). So if you have a youth that is in 6th-8th grade be sure to come to the August 15th meeting where we can register you for the year. On August 22nd we will begin our time together exploring our Christian heritage and learning how to proclaim the Christian faith with our voice!
Also I am looking for people who are called to be passionate leaders and mentors for our youth. We have a blessed congregation full of leaders and we need your help in teaching and nurturing our youth and families in exploring their faith.
Young Adult Chillin’
College and school are right around the corner as August is coming along. So if you need a time where you can leave your worries from school and work to relax, sit, get some great food, and have a great time for fellowship, we are still continuing our Chillin’ events. We are going to change our days and times to meet on Sunday at 7:30 over at Starbucks on Fairmont Parkway beginning on August 22nd. Sr. High and Jr. High Youth Group
Summer is only just a few more weeks longer and how many times can you watch the same movie or play the same video game. Why not come to our Jr. High and Sr. High to our youth groups where we will have fun fellowship while trying to stay cool in the Houston heat.
For Jr. High youth group, we will meet at Peace Lutheran Church at 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm (dates below) right before Confirmation (Begins August 15th) and Sr. High we will meet on Wednesdays at 7:00- 8:30 pm! For Sr. High, I encourage you to bring an item that we can snack on as we do our fellowship together. Thank you for those families that have already talked to me about a time to meet, but for those that have not, there is still time! I have placed a sign up sheet on our youth bulletin for families to sign up what day and time you would like to schedule a meal together where we can bond together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. However you do have the choice of deny the invitation. This can be a home meal or out to eat, I will leave that up to you. I look forward to meeting everyone in our community.

All students ready for instruction in First Communion (we suggest 3rd grade or higher) are invited to attend classes every Sunday at 1:00 pm on September 19 & 26. School is just around the corner! So at all three services on August 22nd, we are going to bless our students as they begin another milestone in their lives and we will also bless our teachers who continue to nurture and guide our children and youth in their education of the world and of their faith. So we are asking students to bring your backpacks to service! Also mark your calendars for August 29th for our Rally Day celebration as we will introduce our Sunday School teachers and also have a time in the fellowship hall where our we can share stories of our summer!

We are counting down to October 16th. The Bazaar Team is selling Raffle Tickets today between the 8:30 & 9:45 service and the 9:45 and 11:00 service. Raffle items will be on display at that time.
Anyone working on crafts at home or have completed crafts for the Bazaar can turn these items over to the Bazaar Team on Sundays in August and September so these items may be priced. Come Sing With the Choir of Peace
Our 9:45 choir is now known as “The Choir of Peace.” We are the Choir of Peace because we belong to Peace Lutheran, but also we experience the peace that passes all understanding as we work together in our practices and enjoy Christian fellowship. Our practice room is a stress-free zone where you can enjoy singing and sharing your faith journey with others.
We will be resuming rehearsals on Rally Day, August 29 at 8:30 a.m. While the music we sing this year will be easier to learn, we always remain committed to offering the best music in worship in a variety of styles. Last year, we lost several key choir leaders who have serious vocal health issues. If you love singing, we really need you in choir. Please prayerfully consider making the commitment to a one hour weekly rehearsal and one weekly service, all on Sunday morning – a day we have found has fewer schedule conflicts. We need you!

Pasadena Community Ministries
We were blessed this month with the donations that we collected for the PCM with both food and clothing donations. We did a great job with Sunday Undies on the Undie Sunday Collection Sundays.
DUE TO THE NEED .....We will continue putting a special emphasis on collecting UNDIES through the 2nd Sunday of September. There is still a great need for school uniforms for Pasadena and Deer Park schools. All types and sizes of clothing will also continue to be collected so Don't throw away-- DONATE. The clothing donation boxes are located under the large table in the narthex. The Food donations go in the hallway between the narthex and fellowship hall. (Cereals, peanut butter, jelly and all canned/packaged goods are greatly needed)
A big thanks to Millie Rath for her continued collecting of clothing, ink toners, stamps, newspapers and etc. Millie, you efforts are greatly appreciated.

Sunday School Mission Project
As a mission project we are encouraging our youth to bring school supplies for Haiti. The Women’s group at Peace supports many charitable organizations and we wanted to take this opportunity to get our youth involved in this important mission project. Boxes will be available in the narthex and Sunday School opening room for children to place the supplies in. We encourage all children to bring an item and support this charity. We will collect supplies until Sunday, September 13. Please bring one of the following items: pencils, spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners. This Sundays Events
We pause in our journey through year C of our lectionary readings to celebrate Mary, the bearer of the savior of the world. We stop to listen to her song and join our voices to this radical vision of God turning the world upside down. The mighty will be brought low and the lowly will be lifted. The hungry will be filled with good things and the rich will be left empty. These words remind us of our vision of who we are: a community where everyone is treasured, where everyone is valued, where no one longs to be fed and no one gloats over their status. We gather as the community of the baptized where there is unity of faith and love. The title of my sermon is "Singing Mary's Song" and will be about our common vision and life together.
This Sunday we will also meet Rev. Jan Menky, Pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (Lutheran) in Michalovce, Slovakia. He will be sharing a greeting at worship and visiting our adult Sunday School classes and talk briefly about church life in Slovakia.
This Sunday we will also have blood pressure screening. We thank our nurses who provide this service to our congregation. The screening will take place in the library.
This Sunday we will be restarting our confirmation program with a parent-student orientation at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall. This program is for all 6-8 graders. We will be reviewing our year and our program. We will be introducing a new curriculum. Both Ben and myself will be leading and teaching.
I have been spending this week with 5 of our elementary age kids at Camp Lutherhill. We have had a fantastic, although hot at times, week. So many wonderful experiences happen for kids at camp, emotionally and spiritually. On the Aug. 29 we will be sharing all the pictures and videos.
Gospel Concert Sponsored by the Brotherhood
The “Joyful Noise Praise Team & Nickel Strings" from Highlands United Methodist Church will present a concert of southern gospel songs and old church hymns on Sunday, August 22 at 4:00pm to 6:30pm here at Peace Lutheran Church. Worship Workshop: Saturday, August 21, 9:00am

Four Great Sundays of Fun
We are going to have four Sundays of having some fun and at the same time blessing and celebrating the people and ministries of Peace. Each Sunday will have a different theme and event so pay attention and join in the activities.
Sunday, August 22, Back to Public and Private School Sunday.
We will be thanking and lifting up in prayer all teachers, students and staff at all three services. We will also be blessing backpacks at 8:30 and 11:00. We will also be celebrating all kindergartners as they begin their education with special recognition and gifts.
We ask all students to bring their backpacks. We will have a little token to make sure you remember to take your faith with you as you go to class.
Sunday, August 29, Sunday School Rally day and end of the summer celebration. Wear summer casual clothing and bring your mementos from the summer to share.
We will be kicking off our Sunday School program and commissioning our Sunday School teachers and staff. The students will meet their new teachers. We will also be celebrating the end of the summer and ask everyone to wear summer casual clothes, (t-shirts and sandals are permitted), and to bring pictures or some item that symbolizes something fun you did this summer. We will have tables in the fellowship hall for you to display your stuff. You can make a poster or have pictures or items with a piece of paper with your name and explanation next to them. We are doing this to foster community in our congregation and to get to know each other better.
We will have a continental breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8-11.
Sunday, September 5, Vocation Sunday
We are asking everyone to wear what they wear to work on this Sunday as we celebrate our vocations as God's calling in our lives. We will also be inviting you to share what you do in a presentation we are presenting. It is always fun to see the kind of work our people do.
Sunday, September 12, College Sunday
We are asking everyone to wear or bring something that shows their favorite college. We will be praying for our college students that day and blessing care packages that we will send them.

From the Youth Director
I would like to thank those who attended the youth and family ministry workshops over at IHOP the last couple of weeks. I am excited as I have taken everything that we discussed and implemented it into our youth and family ministry program this coming year. If you have any other comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
I attended the CROP walk meeting last week and First Presbyterian asked us for some walkers (1K-10K) so that we can raise money for Pasadena Community Ministry and Church World service to fight hunger poverty at home and around the world. We will be walking at Rotary Pavilion Crenshaw Park on Sunday, October 10th at 1:30 pm. This is a large community effort in Pasadena and I would love to make this our big family service event for the fall. I would love for us to come out in big numbers so please contact me if you are interested!
I can’t thank everyone enough, as it has already been two months here and look how God has worked through our ministry together.

Confirmation 2010-2011
It’s coming sooner than you think. Beginning tonight, we will have our parent and student orientation to share our dream for our confirmation program and what to expect this year! This year we are going to learn about the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, and the life of Martin Luther through songs, worship, prayer, and interactive activities (because we know you get lectured too much already at schools and work). So if you have a youth that is in 6th-8th grade be sure to come to the August 15th meeting where we can register you for the year. On August 22nd we will begin our time together exploring our Christian heritage and learning how to proclaim the Christian faith with our voice!
Also I am looking for people who are called to be passionate leaders and mentors for our youth. We have a blessed congregation full of leaders and we need your help in teaching and nurturing our youth and families in exploring their faith.
Young Adult Chillin’
College and school are right around the corner as August is coming along. So if you need a time where you can leave your worries from school and work to relax, sit, get some great food, and have a great time for fellowship, we are still continuing our Chillin’ events. We are going to change our days and times to meet on Sunday at 7:30 over at Starbucks on Fairmont Parkway beginning on August 22nd. Check out our church bulletin, youth board, or our facebook page for more information!
Sr. High and Jr. High Youth Group
Summer is only just a few more weeks longer and how many times can you watch the same movie or play the same video game. Why not come to our Jr. High and Sr. High to our youth groups where we will have fun fellowship while trying to stay cool in the Houston heat.
For Jr. High youth group, we will meet at Peace Lutheran Church at 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm (dates below) right before Confirmation (Begins August 15th) and Sr. High we will meet on Wednesdays at 7:00- 8:30 pm! For Sr. High, I encourage you to bring an item that we can snack on as we do our fellowship together. There will be more announcements and information on the youth board, church bulletin, and our facebook page!

Where did the summer go? Its been exciting, but its time to wind down for school.
Think again! Were going to have school here at Peace, but it’s not what you think, we’re going to go through the school day having fun in our classes of biology, science, lunch, English, and recess. So come one and come all, to our celebration of school on August 18th from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Make sure to bring a friend!
Tuesday Peace Family Night
Thank you for those families that have already talked to me about a time to meet, but for those that have not, there is still time! I have placed a sign up sheet on our youth bulletin for families to sign up what day and time you would like to schedule a meal together where we can bond together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. However you do have the choice of deny the invitation. This can be a home meal or out to eat, I will leave that up to you. I look forward to meeting everyone in our community.

First Communion Classes
All students ready for instruction in First Communion (we suggest 3rd grade or higher) are invited to attend classes every Sunday at 1:00 pm on September 19 & 26. Blessing our Students, Teachers and Backpacks: August 22nd and Rally Day August 29th
School is just around the corner! So at all three services on August 22nd, we are going to bless our students as they begin another milestone in their lives and we will also bless our teachers who continue to nurture and guide our children and youth in their education of the world and of their faith. So we are asking students to bring your backpacks to service! Also mark your calendars for August 29th for our Rally Day celebration as we will introduce our Sunday School teachers and also have a time in the fellowship hall where our we can share stories of our summer!

Bazaar News
We are counting down to October 16th. The Bazaar Team is selling Raffle Tickets today between the 8:30 & 9:45 service and the 9:45 and 11:00 service. Raffle items will be on display at that time.
Anyone working on crafts at home or have completed crafts for the Bazaar can turn these items over to the Bazaar Team on Sundays in August and September so these items may be priced. If you want a certain price for your items please pass this information on to someone on the team. The Bazaar Team appreciates your support and we are looking forward to a great Bazaar.

Church Women United invites you to their annual Book Review and Luncheon on August 20th. This event will be held at Sunset Methodist Church, 709 Allendale, Pasadena. Come Sing With the Choir of Peace
Our 9:45 choir is now known as “The Choir of Peace.” We are the Choir of Peace because we belong to Peace Lutheran, but also we experience the peace that passes all understanding as we work together in our practices and enjoy Christian fellowship. Our practice room is a stress-free zone where you can enjoy singing and sharing your faith journey with others.
We will be resuming rehearsals on Rally Day, August 29 at 8:30 a.m. While the music we sing this year will be easier to learn, we always remain committed to offering the best music in worship in a variety of styles. Last year, we lost several key choir leaders who have serious vocal health issues. If you love singing, we really need you in choir. Please prayerfully consider making the commitment to a one hour weekly rehearsal and one weekly service, all on Sunday morning – a day we have found has fewer schedule conflicts. We need you!

Pasadena Community Ministries
We were blessed this month with the donations that we collected for the PCM with both food and clothing donations. We did a great job with Sunday Undies on the Undie Sunday Collection Sundays.
DUE TO THE NEED .....We will continue putting a special emphasis on collecting UNDIES through the 2nd Sunday of September. There is still a great need for school uniforms for Pasadena and Deer Park schools. All types and sizes of clothing will also continue to be collected so Don't throw away-- DONATE. The clothing donation boxes are located under the large table in the narthex. The Food donations go in the hallway between the narthex and fellowship hall. (Cereals, peanut butter, jelly and all canned/packaged goods are greatly needed)
A big thanks to Millie Rath for her continued collecting of clothing, ink toners, stamps, newspapers and etc. Millie, you efforts are greatly appreciated.

New Member Inquiry Luncheon

Sunday School Mission Project
As a mission project we are encouraging our youth to bring school supplies for Haiti. The Women’s group at Peace supports many charitable organizations and we wanted to take this opportunity to get our youth involved in this important mission project. Boxes will be available in the narthex and Sunday School opening room for children to place the supplies in. We encourage all children to bring an item and support this charity. We will collect supplies until Sunday, September 13. Please bring one of the following items: pencils, spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners. Thanks again for your support in this important project.

Sarah's House is a shelter for women who are in crisis and their children, and is located at 2210 Wichita, Pasadena, TX. These women have lost their jobs and can't afford housing. Many have been sleeping in their cars. Please consider making a donation of any of the following items:

Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010.
Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth.

A labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation, a crucible of change, a watering hole for the spirit and a mirror of the soul.
Fascinating Stories Of Forgotten Lives
This new Bible study will begin September 12th during the Sunday School hour, 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. We will meet in Room 201, the classroom upstairs near the conference room. Some of the chapters we will study are Often-Overlooked Lives of Signifance; Achan, The Man Whose Sin Brought Calamity; Samuel, The Boy Who Heard God’s Voice; and other Bible stories about Naaman, Abigail, and Absalom.
This 14 chapter study should help us to remember that nobody is insignificant, that God pays attention to us, and God loves us dearly.
If you would enjoy an informal, but informative Sunday School class; if you are looking for a group who is loving and accepting; if you want to learn more about God and His people (that includes us); please join us.

Convention News
The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM.
“Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. This Sundays Events
Luke continues to lay in front of us a challenge to our understanding of wealth and this Sunday we will have a classic stewardship story about the foolish slave who squanders his master's generosity. The title of my sermon is "On Being Faithful" and will lift up how God entrusts us with all we have and calls us to be faithful. I hope you will find strength in it.
This Sunday at the 8:30 service we will also be celebrating the baptism of Tyler Guertin, he is the son of Daren and Kami and brother of Lorelai.
We will also be having "Fair Trade Coffee" sale and will be sending off 5 kids to Camp Lutherhill. I am planning to go with them.
Stewardship Workshop Results
On Tuesday, August 3, we had a very good meeting to plan our fall stewardship appeal. The theme of the appeal is "Sharing our Gifts at Peace" and will emphasize raising our faith in God's goodness in our lives and the joy of sharing those gifts with others. We will also be celebrating all of the ministry that we are doing together at Peace because of the gifts we share. CWU Book Review
Church Women United invites you to their annual Book Review and Luncheon on August 20th. This event will be held at Sunset Methodist Church, 709 Allendale, Pasadena. The book review starts at 10:30 am, with lunch at 11:30 am. Cost is $10.00 per person. Undies Sunday: August 8
We are joining with other churches in the Pasadena Community Ministries to collect new underwear. Children’s sizes are needed but all sizes will be collected, as all ages are God's children. I challenge each Sunday school class and each group in the church to donate items. Items may be undies, socks, hosiery, t-shirts, pj's, boxers, and etc. There is a special basket for these items under the table in the narthex with the other clothing collection.

Well it was our final day for our youth workshops and what wonderful conversations about what we want our ministry together with our youth and families this year. I will have our planned youth and family ministry model and plan finalized for our congregational meeting this September 12th. If you were not able to make any of the workshops, but you still want to talk, please do not hesitate to call or email me!
It’s past the due date for Student and Parent Packets, and this is for me to get to know you and your family, but also to help update our records. So please everyone try and get these packets to me as soon as possible by either mailing them to me or turn them in at the youth and family ministry wall box next to the youth and family bulletin.

Confirmation 2010-2011
It’s coming sooner than you think. Beginning on August 15th, we will have our parent and student orientation to share our dream for our confirmation program and what to expect this year! This year we are going to learn about the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, and the life of Martin Luther through songs, worship, prayer, and interactive activities (because we know you get lectured too much already at schools and work). So if you have a youth that is in 6th-8th grade be sure to come to August 15th where we can register you for the year and on August 22nd we will begin our time together exploring our Christian heritage and learning how to proclaim the Christian faith with our voice!
Confirmation is just around the corner (August 15th) and I am looking for people who are called to be passionate leaders and mentors for our youth. We have a blessed congregation full of leaders and we need your help in teaching and nurturing our youth and families in exploring their faith.
Young Adult Chillin’
College and school are right around the corner as August is coming along. So if you need a time where you can leave your worries from school and work to relax, sit, get some great food, and have a great time for fellowship, we are still continuing our Chillin events. Summer is only just a few more weeks longer and how many times can you watch the same movie or play the same video game. Why not come to our Jr. High and Sr. High to our youth groups where we will have fun fellowship while trying to stay cool in the Houston heat. For Jr. High youth group, we will meet at Peace Lutheran Church at 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm (dates below) right before Confirmation (Begins August 15th) and Sr. High we will meet on Wednesdays at 7:00- 8:30pm! For Sr. high, I encourage you to bring an item that we can snack on as we do our fellowship together. Tuesday Peace Family Night
I have placed a sign up sheet on our youth bulletin board for families to sign up what day and time you would like to schedule a meal together where we can bond together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. However you do have the choice to deny the invitation. This can be a home meal or out to eat, I will leave that up to you. By the time I return from Lutherhill, I will begin calling our families here and schedule a time that we can spend this time together. I look forward to meeting everyone in our community.

First Communion Classes
All students ready for instruction in First Communion (we suggest 3rd grade or higher) are invited to attend classes every Sunday at 1:00 pm on September 19 & 26. Church Council Minutes
The Council has had meetings on July 11, July 14 and July 25 regarding the following issues: new hire for Administrative Director (Kenny Sanders will be leaving in September), Bylaws changes relative to electing new officers and the Survey outcomes. Decisions: Council voted to apply the original Director of Administration position’s job description when posting for this position. A Bylaws change has been recommended to elect new officers at the annual May, June or July meeting of the congregation. The rationale for the changes was to provide a mentoring time frame for the newly elected officers, before installation. Survey outcomes will be presented by the appropriate Committees so that Action Plans can be shared with the congregation. A congregation meting is planned for September 12, 2010.

Sunday School Mission Project
As a mission project we are encouraging our youth to bring school supplies for Haiti. The Women’s group at Peace supports many charitable organizations and we wanted to take this opportunity to get our youth involved in this important mission project. Boxes will be available in the narthex and Sunday School opening room for children to place the supplies in. We encourage all children to bring an item and support this charity. We will collect supplies until Sunday, September 13. Please bring one of the following items: pencils, spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners. Thanks again for your support in this important project.
Convention News
The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM.
“Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. As most of you know, Kenny Sanders will be leaving his part time position as Director of Administration at Peace Lutheran Church. We will be looking to refill the position immediately. If you are interested or know of someone that may be interested, please review the job description (found in Sunday’s bulletin and on the narthex table) and then forward your resume to dhaygood@meador.com. The position is a part time position of 30 hours per week and the pay is $15.00 an hour.
Going Away… Sort Of….
Well here it is. It has been about 2.5 years that I have been blessed to be the Director of Administration here at Peace. And now it is time for me to move on. I am going back to school this fall and due to the nature of the classes and clinicals, I will not be able to fulfill the obligations of this position. So with that, August 20, 2010 will be my last day in this capacity. And if that was not enough, Thaden’s little brother will be here at the end of November sometime.
I leave this position not having done as well as I wish I had. But, with that being said we were able to accomplish a few things in the last couple of years. We got a new roof on the church that will outlast most/all of us and is a lot more energy efficient. We lowered our premiums and increased our insurance coverage. We refinanced our 2 mortgages and decreased our monthly note. We remodeled/updated the sanctuary. We decreased our cost and increased productivity with a new printer, a duplicator, and a new postage machine. We decreased our electric bill. And the playground is FINALLY done, minus a few little tweaks.
Those were some of the highlights. There were also all the a/c issues, the late night wake up calls from ADT because the fire alarm was going off. Fortunately, there was only one fire in the attic and it was very minor compared to what it could have been. And then all the other little things….
So, I’m going away from this position but not the church. Jennifer, the boys and I will still be here. I’m just going to be scarce for a few months. Thank you to everyone for their thoughtfulness and prayers these past couple of years. Hopefully, the church is better now than when I came to this position, if only a little bit. If so, then it was a successful 2 + years.

Creative Hands Bracelet Class
Creative Hands will meet on Thursday, August 12th at 6:30 pm in the upstairs conference room. We invite ALL to come and make a bracelet for the 2010 Bazaar. We are extending a special invitation to our young people and Girl Scouts. The Youth will “Make 2 Take 1". (In other words they will get to pick one of the bracelets they make to keep.) There is NO COST. However, we do ask you to consider bringing a canned good or a “Sunday Undie” to be donated to the Pasadena Community Ministry. Bring a snack to share. This is sponsored by the Creative Hands Ministry. We do need you to sign up as we need an idea of how many supplies to have on hand.

Fiesta Dinner Party
Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth. Our Committee members are: Judy Griffin, Cheryl Picha, Judy & Allen Werner, Ruth Meyer, Ann Nicholson, Cindy Stang, Pearl Stockum, Marilyn Seich, Ellen Cumbie and Lin Peterson. A labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation, a crucible of change, a watering hole for the spirit and a mirror of the soul.
Co-Ed Softball and Volleyball
Softball registration is until August 31 with the City of Pasadena and league play begins September. Co-Ed Indoor Volleyball will be at First Baptist Church on Fairmont beginning in October. This Sundays Events
Luke continues to lay in front of us a challenge to our understanding of wealth and this Sunday we will have a classic stewardship story about the foolish slave who squanders his master's generosity. The title of my sermon is "On Being Faithful" and will lift up how God entrusts us with all we have and calls us to be faithful. I hope you will find strength in it.
This Sunday at the 8:30 service we will also be celebrating the baptism of Tyler Guertin, he is the son of Daren and Kami and brother of Lorelai.
We will also be having "Fair Trade Coffee" sale and will be sending off 5 kids to Camp Lutherhill. I am planning to go with them.
Stewardship Workshop Results
On Tuesday, August 3, we had a very good meeting to plan our fall stewardship appeal. The theme of the appeal is "Sharing our Gifts at Peace" and will emphasize raising our faith in God's goodness in our lives and the joy of sharing those gifts with others. We will also be celebrating all of the ministry that we are doing together at Peace because of the gifts we share. Pastor Jan Menky Visitation
Rev, Jan Menky Slovkia, Pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (Lutheran) in Michalovce, Slovakia will be visiting Peace on Sunday morning, August 15. We are going to have four Sundays of having some fun and at the same time blessing and celebrating the people and ministries of Peace. Each Sunday will have a different theme and event so pay attention and join in the activities.
Sunday, August 22, Back to Public and Private School Sunday
We will be thanking and lifting up in prayer all teachers, students and staff at all three services. We will also be blessing Backpacks at 8:30 and 11:00. We will also be celebrating all kindergartners as they begin their education with special recognition and gifts. We ask all students to bring their backpacks. We will have a little token to make sure you remember to take your faith with you as you go to class.
Sunday, August 29, Sunday School Rally Day and end of the summer celebration. Wear summer casual clothing and bring your mementos from the summer to share. We will be kicking off our Sunday School program and commissioning our Sunday School teachers and staff. The students will meet their new teachers.
We will also be celebrating the end of the summer and ask everyone to wear summer casual clothes (t-shirts and sandals are permitted), and to bring pictures or some item that symbolizes something fun you did this summer. We will have tables in the fellowship hall for you to display your stuff. You can make a poster or have pictures or items with a piece of paper with your name and explanation next to them. We are doing this to foster community in our congregation and to get to know each other better.
We will have a continental breakfast in the fellowship hall from 8-11.
Sunday, September 5, Vocation Sunday
We are asking everyone to wear what they wear to work on this Sunday as we celebrate our vocations as God's calling in our lives. We will also be inviting to share what you do in a presentation we are presenting. It is always fun to see the kind of work our people do.

We are asking everyone to wear or bring something that shows their favorite college. We will be praying for our college students that day and blessing care packages that we will send them.

The Council has had meetings on July 11, July 14 and July 25 regarding the following issues: new hire for Administrative Director (Kenny Sanders will be leaving in September), Bylaws changes relative to electing new officers and the Survey outcomes. Decisions: Council voted to apply the original Director of Administration position’s job description when posting for this position. A Bylaws change has been recommended to elect new officers at the annual May, June or July meeting of the congregation. The rationale for the changes was to provide a mentoring time frame for the newly elected officers, before installation. Survey outcomes will be presented by the appropriate Committees so that Action Plans can be shared with the congregation. A congregation meting is planned for September 12, 2010.

Sunday School Mission Project
As a mission project we are encouraging our youth to bring school supplies for Haiti. The Women’s group at Peace supports many charitable organizations and we wanted to take this opportunity to get our youth involved in this important mission project. Boxes will be available in the narthex and Sunday School opening room for children to place the supplies in. We encourage all children to bring an item and support this charity. We will collect supplies until Sunday, September 13. Please bring one of the following items: pencils, spiral notebooks, crayons, scissors, erasers, rulers and pencil sharpeners. Thanks again for your support in this important project.
Convention News
The 23rd Annual Convention of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Womens’ Organization will be held here at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 25, 2010 beginning at 8:00 AM.
“Ignite Your Spirit With Your Gifts” will be our theme and we will have gifts galore. Workshops will be offered as a gift to you by Sharon Sledge, Jany Reeve and many more. Convention Co-Chairs Peg Swavely and Mavis Greif are working long and hard to bring you a great convention. Jeanene Konviska and Virginia Rodriguez will be cooking up a great breakfast and lunch for you with the help of Sam’s and Antonio’s. Pastor David Tart will be our Chaplain for convention and will conduct the opening devotional and closing worship service. Friday night before convention will be a mixer and get to know you at House of Prayer Lutheran Church just a little ways down Space Center. Registration fee is $55.00. From Darla Haygood to All
As most of you know, Kenny Sanders will be leaving his part time position as Director of Administration at Peace Lutheran Church. We will be looking to refill the position immediately. If you are interested or know of someone that may be interested, please review the job description (found in Sunday’s bulletin and on the narthex table) and then forward your resume to dhaygood@meador.com. The position is a part time position of 30 hours per week and the pay is $15.00 an hour.
Going Away… Sort Of….
Well here it is. It has been about 2.5 years that I have been blessed to be the Director of Administration here at Peace. And now it is time for me to move on. I am going back to school this fall and due to the nature of the classes and clinicals, I will not be able to fulfill the obligations of this position. So with that, August 20, 2010 will be my last day in this capacity. And if that was not enough, Thaden’s little brother will be here at the end of November sometime.
I leave this position not having done as well as I wish I had. But, with that being said we were able to accomplish a few things in the last couple of years. We got a new roof on the church that will outlast most/all of us and is a lot more energy efficient. We lowered our premiums and increased our insurance coverage. We refinanced our 2 mortgages and decreased our monthly note. We remodeled/updated the sanctuary. We decreased our cost and increased productivity with a new printer, a duplicator, and a new postage machine. We decreased our electric bill. And the playground is FINALLY done, minus a few little tweaks.
Those were some of the highlights. There were also all the a/c issues, the late night wake up calls from ADT because the fire alarm was going off. Fortunately, there was only one fire in the attic and it was very minor compared to what it could have been. And then all the other little things….
So, I’m going away from this position but not the church. Jennifer, the boys and I will still be here. I’m just going to be scarce for a few months. Thank you to everyone for their thoughtfulness and prayers these past couple of years. Hopefully, the church is better now than when I came to this position, if only a little bit. If so, then it was a successful 2 + years.

Creative Hands Bracelet Class
Creative Hands will meet on Thursday, August 12th at 6:30 pm in the upstairs conference room. We invite ALL to come and make a bracelet for the 2010 Bazaar. We are extending a special invitation to our young people and Girl Scouts. The Youth will “Make 2 Take 1". (In other words they will get to pick one of the bracelets they make to keep.) There is NO COST. However, we do ask you to consider bringing a canned good or a “Sunday Undie” to be donated to the Pasadena Community Ministry. Bring a snack to share. This is sponsored by the Creative Hands Ministry. We do need you to sign up as we need an idea of how many supplies to have on hand.

Fiesta Dinner Party
Please join Peace Lutheran Church and the Labyrinth Committee for a Fiesta Dinner on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $8.00 per adult, and go on sale today through September 5th in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or you may call any of the committee members listed to reserve tickets. Tickets are limited, so be sure and purchase yours early. Babysitting will be provided. The proceeds from the dinner will go toward building our prayer labyrinth. Our Committee members are: Judy Griffin, Cheryl Picha, Judy & Allen Werner, Ruth Meyer, Ann Nicholson, Cindy Stang, Pearl Stockum, Marilyn Seich, Ellen Cumbie and Lin Peterson. A labyrinth is a path of prayer, a walking meditation, a crucible of change, a watering hole for the spirit and a mirror of the soul.
Co-Ed Softball and Volleyball
Softball registration is until August 31 with the City of Pasadena and league play begins September. Co-Ed Indoor Volleyball will be at First Baptist Church on Fairmont beginning in October.
