Sunday in Germany

We are waking up to a beautiful morning in Mannheim.  Everyone is well and having a wonderful time.  We have seen and experienced more that we anticipated and will finish this trip with memories of a lifetime.
We will have lots to share.  I think all of us have been renewed in our Lutheran faith and the witness of Martin Luther.
Today we will finish our tour with a visit to the site where Martin Luther took his stand on the Word of God.  I can think of no better place to complete our journey than on a Sunday in a place where God's Word reigned supreme.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Come, join others as we get excited about inspiring generosity for the work of the kingdom at Peace. We will be meeting at IHOP for dinner and discussion about ideas for promoting the joyful and peaceful stewardship lifestyle. This fall we will be educating our community about the abundance of God that he gives to us out of his divine mercy. We are a wealthy congregation and we have more money and time and abilities than we can ever use. Our only challenge is to let go of our fears of not having enough so that we can joyfully share the blessings of God. Come and join us. We would love to have your ideas and thoughts. You can also join by participating in our online Google Group. http://groups.google.com/group/peace-stewardship

From the Youth Director
I hope all is going well as I help lead a leadership track at our synod event Disciple Project in Seguin, Texas. I will be back on Friday morning. I just wanted to remind everyone about the student and parent information packets. This is to help me update my records here at the office and get an idea of who you are! So please complete these and turn them in no later than July 15th so that I can have time to read them before the summer comes to a close and we begin our ministry in the fall!

Also for those that are in confirmation, we are going to begin our confirmation program on August 15th where Pastor David and I will host our confirmation orientation. With this in mind, I have sent out a confirmation letter with our schedule of confirmation dates.

If you did not get a copy of the student profile, parent profile, or confirmation letter and schedule please let me know and I will get you a copy!

From Coburg

Today we begin our continued quest to find the "real" Martin Luther"  in the town of Coburg, Germany. The weather is a little chilly.  We wil be visiting a famous castle here where Luther stayed and then on to an Augustian monistary. (Luther was an Augustian monk.) Tonight we sleep in Munich.
I have many impressions that linger in my mind, but the one I think of most often is the huge influence Luther has on faith and our freedom.  His discovery of the Gospel and the certainty of salvation continues to provide us a freedom to live in joy and peace. Every morning we begin with selected readings from his writings and he continues to lift our spirits.

From Germany

We are having a fabulous time! Everyone is well and our group has a lot of fun being together. We have had one inspirational experience after the other-Wittenberg, l
Luther's birthplace, where he entered the monistary, and where he translated the New Testament. I will write more tomorrow. We prayed for you today.

This Sundays Events
I will be off traveling the great land of Germany and visiting sites associated with Martin Luther. I am anticipating that it should be inspiring. I hope to be able to post to the Peace Blog, but am not sure of how accessible the internet will be to me. We will have to see.

Pastor Don Cole will be filling in for me. We thank him for his ministry. Several pastors are available for pastoral care while I am gone. Contact Judy, our secretary, if you need assistance.

Our Lutheran identity is our heritage and our gift to our community. Yet I wonder how many of us can answer the question, "What does it mean to be a Lutheran"? The answer is both simple and profound. To be a Lutheran means to live surrounded in the faith that God takes the intitiative to embrace us first and to embrace, not our achievements or goodness, but to embrace us in our doubts and failings. God is most known in the cross and our faith and God calls us to surrender to this grace in our lives. This grace enables us to live in ambiguity and paradox. Ultimately, all we have is our trust that Grace fills the universe and touches all of us in the most personal ways. In a religious climate that often pressures people and equates being a Christian with material blessings and "success", we stand in this conviction that the blessings of faith are love and hope. We find a calmness, a joy and a certainty that comes from surrendering ourselves to the mercy of God and trusting his kindness.

Special Words of Encouragement from Pastor Tart
What a blessing it is to have a full time youth and family director back on staff. I want to thank all of you for your financial generosity that makes this ministry possible. We have our financial challenges but with generous hearts we will move forward to make a difference in the lives of people here and in the world. In late July you will receive a full explanation of our financial situation.

We are also collecting funds to support the work of our church wide. Let us remember that Ben and myself both attended a seminary of the ELCA, Wartburg, that exists because of our financial support of wider church. Many missionaries, new congregations and ministries depend on our support. If you want to support this work, please make an offering by marking an envelope "ELCA" support. Our church leadership, the council, is leading this appeal.

FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

JUNE 13, 2010

For a list of upcoming activities go to http://www.mychurchevents.com/calendar/calendar.aspx?ci=G1K5L6N8L6I3N8

Be sure to check out our website http://welcometopeace.com

If you cannot attend this Sunday, you can still make an offering using our online service at Contribute Online. Thank you for your commitment to our mission and ministry.

We invite you to become a friend of Peace on the Peace Facebook webpage. Facebook is an online social networking site that helps communities of friends stay connected on an on-going basis. The cost is free. Facebook is a lot fun and you will enjoy the connections. You will need a Facebook account to join. Go to http://facebook.com for more information and search Facebook for Peace Lutheran Church, Pasadena Texas. We look forward to you joining.

This Sundays Events
We have a very interesting story from Luke when Jesus confronts a Pharisee by the name of Simon with the the wideness of God's mercy and kindness. My sermon will be about the "power of forgiveness" and will be about how the foundation of forgiveness is the intrinsic value of every human being. I hope that you will enjoy it.

We will be installing our new Youth and Family Director, Ben Remmert, at all three services. We are very excited and pleased about the gifts and joy he brings our church. We will also have a reception in the fellowship hall after each service.

We will also be baptizing Reilly Nathanial Smith at the 11am service. Parents are Stephanie Smith and Jacob Frye

The council also approved a special appeal for funds to go toward our synod benevolence. This Sunday we will begin collecting funds. We want to raise at least 1% of our budget or $5500 to go toward the ministry of the wider church. So far we have collect $2400. Most ELCA congregations send 6% of their budget to church wide. The ideal is 10%. We can easily do this and I hope everyone will think of the important work of our national church. Go to http://elca.org or http://gulfcoastsynod.org for more information about what our church does. You will be amazed. To be frank, if we are not supportive of the ELCA then other congregations have to pick up more of the expenses.

Fourth of July Church Picnic
This summer the 4th of July falls on a Sunday and we would like to see if there is any interest in attending a 5pm-dark event featuring chopped barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, sides and ice cream. We will also have games for adults and children. We will end the evening by watching the fireworks from the Peace parking lot. A sign up sheet is in the narthex or you can email jgriffin@welcometopeace.com. This is open to all family and friends. We will have a free will offering to cover the costs. Please let us know if you are interested.

Our Stewardship of Finances
We had a finance meeting on Tuesday and I want to encourage everyone to pray about being generous with our congregation. We never want to make our giving about the "Churches need for money" but about supporting the good and wonderful ministries of our congregation. We now are back to having a full time youth and family director and we are excited and pleased to have the honor and joy of supporting his good work. I would hope that we will all think and pray about increasing our giving by 10% as a sign of our support.

PCM - Pasadena Community Ministries

Clothing Ministry
Big thanks to all who supported the Pasadena Community Ministries. This past Tuesday we took in our largest donation ever. Big thanks to the Girl Scout Troop #8133 and also to the Decorative Artists of Texas for their contributions. A special thanks for the much needed children's clothing and to Kelli and Kara Gregory for the donation of Kara's favorite red slippers. For the next month we will continue pushing play clothes for all ages including adults and young children's shoes and underwear. The collection boxes are located under the table in the narthex. They are also in the need of Pasadena and Deer Park school uniforms for fall. Please, if your children have outgrown their uniforms we will be glad to take them in as received. The first Sunday in August will also be "Sunday Undies". We will collect new underwear as well as socks for all ages, especially for school ages children.

Food Ministry
We will continue collecting all types of staple foods with a continued "Big Push' on peanut butter, jelly and cereals. Please place in cabinets located in the hallway between narthex and fellowship hall. We will deliver both clothing and food on July 6th. My van was packed tight and was over half full. Let’s fill it up for the July delivery.

LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project
The midweek Bible Study group is a “partner” in the coffee business and sells coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix through the Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project. Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love, mercy and walk humbly.

The LWR Coffee Project helps Lutherans answer that call by righting the injustices faced by small-scale farmers around the world. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in our congregation and homes, we are helping farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors. Look for the table in the narthex today.

For Sunday, June 6

We invite you to become a friend of Peace on the Peace Facebook webpage. Facebook is an online social networking site that helps communities of friends stay connected on an on-going basis. The cost is free. Facebook is a lot fun and you will enjoy the connections. You will need a Facebook account to join.  Go to http://facebook.com for more information and search Facebook for Peace Lutheran Church, Pasadena Texas. We look forward to you joining.

This Sundays Events
We return to our reading of Luke this Sunday and we begin with the rising of the widow's son. Jesus interrupts the funeral with the power of God to bring life from death. The title of my sermon is "A Funeral Interrupted", and will be about how God is always interrupting our lives with his grace and hope. I will also be challenging us to see ourselves as the interrupters of despair and hopelessness. I hope you enjoy it.

We will also continue with our "Blessing of the Travelers" this Sunday. We will be praying for all those who are traveling this summer and praying for their rest.

This Sunday after the 11:00 service we will have a special reception for David Booher and his new wife, Brenna. We will have a basket for cards and well wishes.

Men's Breakfast Is At 8:00 am this Saturday at Peace.

Fourth of July Church Picnic
This summer the 4th of July falls on a Sunday and we would like to see if there is any interest in attending a 4:30pm-dark event featuring chopped barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, sides and ice cream. We will also have games for adults and children. We will end the evening by watching the fireworks from the Peace parking lot. We are beginning a sign up this Sunday in the narthex or you can email jgriffin@welcometopeace.com. This is open to all family and friends. We will have a free will offering to cover the costs.  Please let us know if you are interested.

We are looking for people to help with the organizing the food and fun. If you are interested, contact Lin Petersen or email Pastor Tart at  (pastordavid@welcometopeace.com).

New Youth and Family Director
Ben is here! We have moved his office with all the other offices.  This will make us more accessible to each other and we will not have to heat and cool the section of the building where the old youth director office was. We will have an installation of Ben on Sunday, June 13 at all three services.

See you Sunday!
Pastor Tart

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of Christ!
I cannot thank everyone for their warmest greetings as I began my first week here at Peace Lutheran Church. I am excited to be a part of your ministries as we share our passions and dreams of sharing our Christian faith with our young people and families. Be on the lookout, as this summer we will begin discussing and brainstorming the ministry that we want to conduct with our families and our youth. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me or email me at benr@welcometopeace.com.
