A Message from Pastor Kelly
Wednesday morning Bible Study in Revelation got off to a great start and will continue next week. There is still time to join and not get too far behind.

This Sunday’s text is from Matthew 16 where Jesus calls Peter “Satan” because he wasn’t on the side of God but of man. The spiritual principle for this week’s message is “Do what is right, give your life away, a cross will be provided, and follow Jesus.”

See you on Sunday!
Pastor Kelly

Behold your God, could be painted across the landscape of John’s gospel, especially the first five chapters. Writing to a universal audience, John shows Jesus as God while focusing on His unique relationship with the Father. Take some time to clean away the debris of traditional opinion and personal feelings and examine the clear picture John gives. As we study the Scriptures, let the breathtaking events of Jesus’ life move your heart to behold Christ . . . the Son of God.

This is the first of a 3 part series on the study of John. Please plan to join us! A sign-up sheet is located on the table in the narthex.

Stewardship Nugget....
The following story comes from Herb Miller’s book “Stewardship Nuggets” (ABINGDON PRESS, 1999). What does God call each of us to do?

Chocolate Years
“A Harvard University report suggests that men who indulge in chocolate live longer. The study of 7,841 Harvard grads found that chocolate and other candy eaters live almost a year longer than those who abstain. The report in Friday’s British Medical Journal speculates that antioxidants in chocolate have health benefits.” [Lubbock Avalanche Journal, 12-21-97]

We do not distribute chocolate during our worship services, but we do something better. Other medical studies indicate that people who give generously to help others are both emotionally and physically healthier. They also live longer as a result of that attitude and behavior.

Recognition of First Responders
September 11th will be the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. On September 11th we will take time during our services to pay tribute to all first responders. If you are a member of the police or fire departments, EMT or nurse please write your name on the sign-up sheet in the narthex or call the church office so that we can recognize you.

Your Help Is Needed
1) Some of you may have noticed that the leaves on the magnolia tree on the side of the church near the offices have turned brown and the tree appears to be dying. Also, the grass in several locations is dying off. The first thing checked was the irrigation system, and it was discovered that some of the sprinkler stations had been turned off--no doubt, inadvertently, but all the same, they had been turned off. Please, please, please do not adjust or turn off the watering system unless you have been duly authorized to do so. If necessary, when the drought ends, the shrubbery and smaller trees can be replaced at a fair cost; however, it will be quite costly if we have to replace any of the larger trees. The oak trees at the time of planting were $250 each…and that was almost 20 years ago. You can imagine the replacement cost today.

2) Also, it is to be noted that the irrigation specialists that service our system have advised that the control unit needs to be replaced. The replacement cost will be between $350-$400. If you would like to contribute to the watering needs of our church home, please designate that the funds be used for “sprinkler &/or watering needs.” Thank you.

From the Youth Director
Take up your cross and follow me… What is your cross that you must take up? It is different for all of us. For some, it’s doing what is necessary to make sure that our family is provided for. For others, it’s showing kindness to the coworker/peer that just bugs us. For others, it can mean something completely different. As Christians, this is an image of us to take the life of Jesus Christ into our lives. We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and to love God with all our being. This is what we are to do when we take up the cross and follow Christ. That when we show God’s love to the world, we will be persecuted by others and we will lose our life, but if we do this, we will find life in Christ, in God.

God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM

Stewardship Nugget....
The following story comes from Herb Miller’s book “Stewardship Nuggets” (ABINGDON PRESS, 1999). What does God call each of us to do?

Overcoming Dangerous Options
Due to three new factors, our generation grapples with the temptation to become addicted to acquisitive materialism in ways unknown during earlier centuries: 1. Mass advertising. 2. A far greater variety of purchasing options. 3. Easy credit through credit cards.

While not as physically destructive as heroin, acquisitive materialism addiction can do enormous damage to our sense of personal contentment and quality of life.

The antidote is still the same as in previous generations—taking seriously Jesus’ warning: “Life does not consist in the abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:15).

Recognition of First Responders
September 11th will be the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. During our worship services on September 11th we will take time to pay tribute to all first responders. From The Youth Director
Who do you say that I am? A great question that we all have to ask when we talk about who is Jesus Christ in our lives. We all have our image of Jesus Christ in our lives and we all can agree that Jesus is the Son of God, but who is Jesus in your life? Our characteristics of Jesus Christ changes as we gain new experiences, however what all Christians from all different walks of life can agree to is that Jesus is our Lord; that Jesus died for us. This is an image of Jesus that we can never forget. So for this week, I want you to ask the question, who do you say Jesus is?
God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM

Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Sunday. (A table will be set up in the narthex.)

3:00 pm Gospel Concert

5:00 pm Farewell Reception for Pastor Galen & Donna

A Message from Pastor Galen
We have been blessed to be a blessing. This Sunday we are again reminded of God's love and care for all people. People need the Lord, even those whom we would call "foreigners." In our Gospel story (Matthew 15:10-28) Jesus and his disciples seem to be on vacation outside of Jesus' home territory of Galilee. They went to the beach. But, while there a woman of the region recognizes Jesus and pleads with him to heal her daughter. At first Jesus hesitates. Is he testing her or is he asking himself if this fits within his mission plan. Come on Sunday and see how the story turns out, and what it tells us about being the church that has been called to be a blessing to all nations.

This Sunday will be my last Sunday as your Interim Pastor. I would invite you to come to the afternoon Gospel concert from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Afterwards join me and my wife Donna for some cake and coffee, etc. so we can say our farewells.

Blessings in Abundance!
Pastor Galen

Farewell Reception for Pastor Galen & Donna: August 14, 5:00 PM
Mark your calendars! As you know, Pastor Galen will be leaving us on August 15th to serve at a church in Michigan. Following the Gospel Concert on August 14th you are invited to a farewell reception to say goodbye.

LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project: August 14
The midweek Bible Study group is a “partner” in the coffee business and sells coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix through the Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in our congregation and homes, we are helping farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors. Look for the table in the narthex today.

From the Youth Director
When we look at our Gospel lesson for this Sunday, it can appear that Jesus was cruel to the Canaanite woman. However, when Jesus came to earth, he came to preach and teach first to the Jews. That does not mean that He didn't love the other people of the world, but the first priority in his ministry on earth was to bring God's chosen ones to repentance. Jesus explained to the woman that his first mission on earth was to preach to the people of Israel. Even though Jesus came first to the Jew, he loved us so much that he shared his love with all of us. It is from this, we can have faith in our Lord and Savior who came and saved us all. This message goes well with the message that our elementary students learned at Lutherhill, that Love Wins. That no matter how hard it is, God’s love wins in the end.
God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM

Stewardship Nugget....
The following story comes from Herb Miller’s book “Stewardship Nuggets” (ABINGDON PRESS, 1999). What does God call each of us to do?

Measuring Our Souls
“Jesus said more about money than the cataclysmic event that will overshadow all of history—his personal return. Why? He wanted to teach us that how we think about money is a very tangible way to measure our spirituality, i.e., our personal relationship to God as well as to one another.”

“Subconscious—yea, conscious—preoccupation with things financial that drives people in a mad scramble to hang on to an affluent lifestyle cries out for pastors and people who will dwell on—teach, think, discuss, and implement—a theology of money.

“Faith, hope, and love will never be displaced as the core of Christian teaching. And money will never be displaced as a means of measuring our souls to see if those forces are really at work.”

“‘Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’” [Leadership, Paul D. Robbins]

From the Call Committee Prayer Team
With a strong call from God, Paul was able to carry the Gospel to Asia and Europe. With a strong call from God, Timothy was able to remain faithful to Paul, even when others fell away. With a strong call from God, our new pastor will be able to lead Peace Lutheran to great works for God.

Pray together with the Call Committee Prayer Team…
Sovereign God, as we go through the process of calling a new pastor, we earnestly seek your favor. We pray that your Holy Spirit will be in and with each member of The Call Committee as they conduct interviews with prospective pastors. Grant them wisdom and discernment, and a clear understanding of your will in and for our church. Inspire their decisions and set their hearts on fire with your will so that they are faithful in all that they do. And, may the service of the Call Committee, the ministry of the Prayer Team, and all that is done in Peace Lutheran be to your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

What’s A Chrismon?
Chrismons are simple copies of symbols of Christianity from its earliest days; others are new explanations of God’s never-changing presence in our ever-changing world; and some are combinations of several elements, old and new. The symbols used represent a variety of biblical and theological concepts which represent the life and ministry of Jesus.

Sunday Undies
Again this year we are taking part in collecting SUNDAY UNDIES for Pasadena Community Ministries. These should be new items, especially in children's sizes. We will collect in July and August. We are still collecting used, clean in-season clothing and gently worn shoes especially sneakers and sandals.

A Message from Pastor Galen
Fear and Faith. In Sunday’s Scripture readings we learn about both fear and faith. Elijah fled in fear to the mountain of God where God spoke to him in a still small voice. Peter and the other disciples were caught in a terrible storm at night. Then they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. And Peter steps out in faith. But instead of keeping his eye on Jesus he saw the wind and the waves and began to sink. Jesus saved him. We, too, experience both fear and faith. Let us listen to Jesus and worship him.

From The Youth Director
Peter walking on water with Jesus… It is a great example of how it can be terrifying to follow Jesus. It can be easy to call ourselves Christians with our friends and family because we are around people that know who we are. But what about those times when you’re out in the unknown? When you’re by yourself and when you are called upon to help spread the love of Christ to others? Most of the time, we do not live up to our faith because it’s too hard or we just do not want to. However, God still loves you, no matter what you do. What a great message we can share about our God to the world. We just need to take the first step like Peter did…
God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM
VBS 2011- Pandamania – Thank You All!
We had such a great time here at Peace where we learned about how wild God is about us. We had over 80 kids registered for VBS and we had over 20 adults for our bible study with our Pastor. I just wanted to take this time to thank all our volunteers and all the committees for the food. Again thank you for your help, truly God worked through us this week to help our children and families interpret their faith.

Youth and Family Workshop- August 14th at 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
It’s our time to come together as we share our hopes and dreams of our youth and family ministry here at Peace, to learn about youth today and what their faith is telling us about our church, and a time to come together to develop tools for faith formation in our congregation. This is a time to learn and engage ourselves as we do ministry with our families here at Peace Lutheran Church. We will have lunch, which will cost $5, and hear reports from the Corpus Christi Trip, Lutherhill, Disciple Project, and other Camp Hope ministries. If you have any other questions, please contact Ben Remmert.
