A Message from Pastor Kelly
Wednesday morning Bible Study in Revelation got off to a great start and will continue next week. There is still time to join and not get too far behind.

This Sunday’s text is from Matthew 16 where Jesus calls Peter “Satan” because he wasn’t on the side of God but of man. The spiritual principle for this week’s message is “Do what is right, give your life away, a cross will be provided, and follow Jesus.”

See you on Sunday!
Pastor Kelly

We anticipate the closing will take place before October 1, 2011 and our revised payment will be effective October 1, 2011. We thank everyone that participated in our congregational meeting, your input and guidance. The finance team and church council think this will improve our cash flow and will assist in meeting our 2012 budget.

Beholding Christ ... The Son Of God ... A Study Of John 1-5
Begins September 11, 9:45-10:45 am in Classroom 202 (upstairs): Joann Hutton will lead this Bible Study.

Behold your God, could be painted across the landscape of John’s gospel, especially the first five chapters. Writing to a universal audience, John shows Jesus as God while focusing on His unique relationship with the Father. Take some time to clean away the debris of traditional opinion and personal feelings and examine the clear picture John gives. As we study the Scriptures, let the breathtaking events of Jesus’ life move your heart to behold Christ . . . the Son of God.

This is the first of a 3 part series on the study of John. Please plan to join us! A sign-up sheet is located on the table in the narthex.

Bethel Bible Study
Begins September 11, 6:00 pm – 2nd floor Conference Room: Geri Warren will lead this Bible Study.

The Old Testament consists of three series of seven lessons each. We will do the first series of seven lessons and then break for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We will return on Jan. 8, 2012 and do seven lessons then take a week break and come back for the last seven lessons. The cost is $50.00 for all three sessions which can be paid out $20.00 the first session and $15.00 for the last two to be paid at the beginning of each session. Interested? A sign up sheet is located on the table in the narthex. If you have any further questions, please contact Geri Warren. 281-479-3875.

Stewardship Nugget....
The following story comes from Herb Miller’s book “Stewardship Nuggets” (ABINGDON PRESS, 1999). What does God call each of us to do?

Chocolate Years
“A Harvard University report suggests that men who indulge in chocolate live longer. The study of 7,841 Harvard grads found that chocolate and other candy eaters live almost a year longer than those who abstain. The report in Friday’s British Medical Journal speculates that antioxidants in chocolate have health benefits.” [Lubbock Avalanche Journal, 12-21-97]

We do not distribute chocolate during our worship services, but we do something better. Other medical studies indicate that people who give generously to help others are both emotionally and physically healthier. They also live longer as a result of that attitude and behavior.

Recognition of First Responders
September 11th will be the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. On September 11th we will take time during our services to pay tribute to all first responders. If you are a member of the police or fire departments, EMT or nurse please write your name on the sign-up sheet in the narthex or call the church office so that we can recognize you.

Your Help Is Needed
1) Some of you may have noticed that the leaves on the magnolia tree on the side of the church near the offices have turned brown and the tree appears to be dying. Also, the grass in several locations is dying off. The first thing checked was the irrigation system, and it was discovered that some of the sprinkler stations had been turned off--no doubt, inadvertently, but all the same, they had been turned off. Please, please, please do not adjust or turn off the watering system unless you have been duly authorized to do so. If necessary, when the drought ends, the shrubbery and smaller trees can be replaced at a fair cost; however, it will be quite costly if we have to replace any of the larger trees. The oak trees at the time of planting were $250 each…and that was almost 20 years ago. You can imagine the replacement cost today.

2) Also, it is to be noted that the irrigation specialists that service our system have advised that the control unit needs to be replaced. The replacement cost will be between $350-$400. If you would like to contribute to the watering needs of our church home, please designate that the funds be used for “sprinkler &/or watering needs.” Thank you.

From the Youth Director
Take up your cross and follow me… What is your cross that you must take up? It is different for all of us. For some, it’s doing what is necessary to make sure that our family is provided for. For others, it’s showing kindness to the coworker/peer that just bugs us. For others, it can mean something completely different. As Christians, this is an image of us to take the life of Jesus Christ into our lives. We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and to love God with all our being. This is what we are to do when we take up the cross and follow Christ. That when we show God’s love to the world, we will be persecuted by others and we will lose our life, but if we do this, we will find life in Christ, in God.

God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM
