Sunday’s Events

CHURCH PICNIC/POTLUCK LUNCH following the 11:00 service.
We’ll have fun activities for the children to enjoy, including a water slide, plus a cake walk (fundraiser for the youth). So bring your family and friends and a dish to share and join the fun!

A Message from Pastor Galen
We are as wise as Solomon if we understand the teaching of Jesus. For Sunday, read ahead from Mathew 13:31-33, 44-52. The wisdom of faith we are given this Sunday is like a merchant in search of fine pearls and on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. One of those "pearls of great value" is our Second Reading for Sunday from Romans 8:26-39, where the Apostle Paul writes, "If God is for us, who is against us?" "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Also, I would like to invite you to join me at Vacation Bible School for an adult Bible class, July 31-August 5th, 6:00-8:30 pm. In the week we are together we will not only share in the fun and excitement of Vacation Bible School, for our study time we will read the Gospel of John and talk about those who were encountered by Jesus - people like Nicodemus, the woman at the well, Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus, Mary Magdalene and Peter, and others. Jesus said, "I have came that you might have life abundantly." As we are encountered by Jesus he also promises that we will share in his life abundantly.

Blessings!
Pastor Galen Knutson

Stewardship Nugget....
The following story comes from Herb Miller’s book “Stewardship Nuggets” (ABINGDON PRESS, 1999). What does God call each of us to do?

Dead Money
“In banking circles the term ‘dead money’ is used to describe the forgotten money on deposit in national banks. You would think that people who deposit money in the bank would certainly remember it, but that is not the case. National banks alone hold fifty million dollars in 2,329,678 accounts whose owners are never heard from....

“That is not the only kind of dead money. Excavations in the Mediterranean have turned up another tragic kind of money that has been ‘dead’ for centuries. In the fascinating book, Gods, Graves and Scholars, it tells of bodies uncovered at Pompeii with bony fingers still clutching gold and silver coins. Money that had been dead since the lava of Mt. Vesuvius covered it.

“In the religious view of life, there is another sort of dead money—that which is never invested in human life. The Parable of the Talents speaks to this, of how one servant hid his money (made it dead), so to speak, and how two other wiser servants made their money come alive through investing it and were rewarded for their stewardship.” [The Christian Ministry, James Langley]

From the Call Committee Prayer Team
God’s gift to us is light in the darkness. Jesus is “the light that shines in the darkness” (John 1:5). God makes us alight with the Spirit and with the work that the Spirit is doing through us—work that glorifies God.

Think About…How is Peace Lutheran a light to the community? Think about ways to make Peace a “light set on a hill” for the sake of those who are still in the darkness. Think about how you can help.
Prayer …
Lord God Most High, set us on fire with your Spirit so that we might be aglow with the gift of life and hope that you offer in Jesus Christ. In the dark world in which we live, set us as a light for all to see, a hope for all to hold, a way for all to follow. In the name of the coming Christ. Amen.

Remember in Prayer… The Call Committee and the Pastor the Lord is preparing for service at Peace, Church Council, Pastor Galen, Ben Remmert, Lay Leaders and Office Staff. Also pray for one another.

The Call Committee thanks you for your continued support and prayers.
Blessings,
Peace Lutheran Call Committee

Upcoming 50+ Bus Trip
Aug. 3 - Bayou Bend, the former home of Ima Hogg, which now houses the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's early American decorative arts and painting collection. Considered one of the premier collections in the country, the rare and beautiful objects dating from 1620-1876 are installed throughout the 1920s mansion in 28 period room settings. There are numerous gardens on the estate that we'll visit. The gardens were created to be outdoor rooms for living and entertaining, not just views to be admired from within the house. Cost of the tour is $6.80 - $8.50 depending on the number of people going on the tour. We'll have lunch at Hickory Hollow. After lunch, we'll visit the Telephone Museum which celebrates an era when telephone communication sometimes relied on the caller's lung power and the words "Hello, Central" were on every lip. The museum covers the period in telephone history from 1876 to 1980. Bus will leave from Peace Lutheran parking lot at 8:45 a.m.

On August 20 reserve your spot as we travel to the Houston Astros Baseball Games. Game time is 6:05 pm, so departure times will be announced later so stay tuned to the weekly emails for this information. Cost is $7.00/person.

On September 1 we will be going to the Beaumont Botanical Garden to tour The Bert & Jack Binks Horticultural Center. (It is air conditioned.) There is a Japanese Garden, and the First Memorial Garden for the 9/11 disaster. Cost: $3.00 for the bus, and the Gardens are FREE. The bus departs Peace Lutheran Church at 8:00 am, arriving in Beaumont at 9:30 am.

If you are interested in going with us on any of these trips, please call Carol (281) 481-5202, Virginia (281) 487-4961 or Judy (281) 470-0407 to get your name on the list for these trips.

Mark Your Calendars Ladies!!!
Please join the Women of Peace on Sunday, August 28th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and bring a friend for another “Creating Chrismons” afternoon. We will have a light meal and spend time not only having fellowship but creating chrismons that will be used on our Christmas trees in the narthex and fellowship hall at Christmas time. This is an ongoing project for the women, and if anyone would like patterns or instructions on making these symbols of Christianity at home please contact one of the Women’s board members and we would be happy to help you.

What’s A Chrismon?
Chrismons are simple copies of symbols of Christianity from its earliest days; others are new explanations of God’s never-changing presence in our ever-changing world; and some are combinations of several elements, old and new. The symbols used represent a variety of biblical and theological concepts which represent the life and ministry of Jesus.

Gospel Concert: August 14 – 3-5 PM
Mark your calendars for a special Gospel Music Event here at Peace Lutheran Church on Sunday, August 14th at 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Krause Center, A Lutheran Social Services Home For Teens
We are still working on the journals for the teens at the Krause Center as well as collecting the travel toiletries. We will use the toiletries in gift bags for each of the kids. These will probably be sent in time for Christmas. We will need 30 plus fun socks for girls (ladies sizes) and 30 plus sport (low quarter) socks for boys, in men's sizes. Also needed are toothbrushes, chapsticks, decks of cards. These teens are limited on what they are allowed to have. We hope to make their holidays a little brighter. Please place donations under the Women of Peace table in the Narthex.

From the Youth Director
The parable of the mustard seed is one of my favorite stories of Jesus. Not because I love mustard (which I do), but the fact of the matter is the image of the power of the Kingdom of Heaven and in our scripture today, I love the different images of the Kingdom of Heaven. The parables speak of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ, giving us new life and an open relationship with God. What a great message for us in this day and age as we live in a world of brokenness. Take this time this week to focus on your relationship with God.

We had a great week of Camp Hope here at Peace Lutheran Church, if you would like to see all the fun we had this week, please go to our facebook group to see all our pictures or stop by the Camp Hope bulletin board in the narthex!
God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM

A Message from Pastor Galen
Come, disciples of our Lord. Jesus sent his 12 disciples out to do the same work he was about - proclaiming the kingdom of heaven, teaching, and healing the hurts of humanity. As Jesus' own disciples today, we listen to our Lord telling us what we must be about, as a church, and as individual Christians. Billy Sunday once said, "Sitting in church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car." Like the first disciples of Jesus, we are also sent to do the work of Jesus. Come, let us sit at Jesus' feet, and then let us go in peace to serve the Lord. Advance reading for Sunday: Matthew 10:40-42.

Blessings!
Pastor Galen

From the Special Call Committee Prayer Group
When we receive what we ask for in the Lord’s Prayer, we are, in effect, receiving heaven and earth and everything they contain. For when we ask for God’s name to be kept holy, for his kingdom to come, for his will to be done, we are overpowering countless devils and engulfing the whole world with prayer.
–Martin Luther

Remember to thank the Lord for those who serve…the Call Committee, the Pastor the Lord is preparing for service at Peace, Pastor Galen, Ben Remmert, Church Council, all Lay Leaders, and the Office Staff. Also pray for one another. Blessings and Peace from the Call Committee Prayer Team.

As Far As We Can Go
“He was a cowboy from Oklahoma, and his story is familiar to most of us. He had been in Kansas City seeing things he had never even imagined. His eyes had been opened on that visit, and he went back to Oklahoma singing to his friends, ‘Everything’s up to date in Kansas City; they’ve gone about as far as they can go.’

“He then proceeded to describe just how far they had gone. He saw 23 gas buggies on one day, he said. He put his ear to a strange apparatus and heard someone talking. They called it a telephone. He saw a skyscraper seven stories tall, ‘about as high as a building ought to go.’ No wonder, then, that he went back shaking his head in wonder at all those folks in Kansas City who had ‘gone about as far as they could go.’

“That young man reflected an instinct as old as humanity, one that is a problem for us, the feeling that when we reach certain levels, surely, we’ve gone about as far as we can go. There is the story of the Hebrew people in Moab, for example. Remember? They had overcome great odds, and had escaped from the Pharaoh in Egypt, and were bound for the Promised Land.

But something happened to them on that journey from captivity to the Promised Land. They reached Moab, and found it comfortable, and they began to settle down there. ‘We’ve gone about as far as we can go,’ they said to one another, and several years passed without another step being taken toward the Promised Land. Finally, one of God’s messengers appeared to them with this message. ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Get up and get going.’ In short, they hadn’t really gone about as far as they could go.

“…A church or an individual begins to die when the message it hears is ‘You’ve gone about as far as you can go.’ We find our life renewed and invigorated when we keep reaching out and growing.

“…The minute we sit back and say, ‘We’ve gone about as far as we can go.’ Life begins to go out of us. It is when we set hard goals for ourselves, and in the name of Jesus Christ reach out for them, then we grow. This is the message that we need to hear, that we must hear. As much as we would like to, we cannot stay the same as a church. Anytime our objective becomes simply to retain what we have, we start to die. For churches weren’t created for the purpose of surviving—they were created to spend themselves in service and in growth.” [Eugene Brice, sermon, Kansas City]

You and I are the same way. We are not created for the purpose of surviving. We are created for service and growth. We celebrate that fact each week when we give our offerings to God. By giving our money, we move toward God’s goal for our soul—service and growth.

At the end of May 2011, the deficit is ($32,388). If we continue at this rate, we will have a deficit of approximately ($77,700) by the end of the year. A deficit this large would deplete our operating cash. As a result, we would not be able to maintain our current state of operation.

Brotherhood Breakfast
All of our men and guests are invited to have breakfast with our men’s group, “The Brotherhood”, on Saturday, July 2nd at 8:00 am in the Fellowship Hall. Any questions, please call Weldon Wilkerson or Art Wiederhold.

From the Youth Director
It’s the second Sunday after Pentecost! Looking into the gospel lesson for sunday, I hear a sense of call for us as Christians in our world today; that when we go out into the world, we are serving our neighbor and they are receiving Jesus Christ. So as we come together this summer, how are you showing Christ in the world?

I just got back from our Sr. High trip in Corpus Christi and we had a blast deep sea fishing (catching a 23 lbs. Red Snapper and a total of 75 pounds of fish), playing football in the ocean, and coming together to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ by helping Mount Olive Lutheran Church with some painting. But what we focus on our time together is what does it mean to be the church today? So when you see one of our youth that attended the trip, I invite you to ask them about their experience.
God Bless,
Ben Remmert, AiM

Confirmation Day Pictures

If you have any pictures of confirmation, we would love to have a copy. Please either send them to Ben Remmert at benr@welcometopeace.com or through the church office.

Thank You’s
“Dear Peace Family,
We will never be able to express our gratitude & thanks for your prayers, visitation, meals, & help during the loss of our son, Flip. The Memorial Service was everything we wanted it to be because of Pastor Galen & our family here at Peace. The food was bountiful & so many people enjoyed it. Pastor Galen's message was right on target & it was so good to share Flip's life with those of you that did not know him. But for those of you that did - you will have wonderful & funny memories to carry you through this difficult time. Our hearts are broken but we know that God has the plan, & His hand has been in Flip's life from birth - leading all of us on our given journey here on earth. We are at peace knowing that Flip is wrapped in the heavenly arms of our Father & is now resting peacefully. May God bless all of you & hold you in His palms. We love you all very much.
Love,
Phillip & Darla Haygood”
♥♥♥♥
“Dear Family of Peace:
I would like to thank you for all the wonderful things you did for the Haygood family – helping to set up, bringing food, and cleaning the fellowship hall. There were so many helping, I can’t say how much I appreciated it. Also, thank you for cleaning the fellowship hall on Sunday. I went back to clean but everything was done. It looked great. Thank you so much.
Virginia Rodriguez”

Upcoming 50+ Bus Trip
On July 20 we will go on a 1-3/4 hour, 17 mile narrated tour around Galveston Island on the Galveston Sightseeing Train. Cost of the tour is $9-10 plus $3 for the bus. After the tour we’ll ride the Bolivar Ferry and have lunch at the Stingaree Restaurant. Bus will leave Peace parking lot at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday’s Event
11:00 Service – Baptism of Madyson Caroline Barnard and Recognition of Public Baptism of Cayden Barnard, children of Jason Barnard and Candice Wright.

A Message from Pastor Galen Knutson
Jesus promises, "I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you." - John 14:18. This Sunday we hear of our Risen Lord's love for us. Love changes people. Love overcomes those things that separate us from each other. Love brings us to life. When we love another person it is not a burden to sacrifice for them. God so love the world and it cost the life of God's son, Jesus. God loves us enough to suffer and die for us. That's the kind of love we are called to - costly love. In 1 John 3:17 we read, "How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?" This week we are reminded again that God needs us to love, in the name of Jesus, those who have suffered great loss during the tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri. It is our privilege to give sacrificially as we participate in God's redemptive love for our world.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study
Pastor Galen is leading a Bible Study on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:00 am in the 2nd floor conference room. This study will continue throughout the summer, every Wednesday. We hope that you will plan to join us.

We begin our time together with a thematic Bible study of Sabbath, and how Jesus’ ministry was for the redemption of all God’s children and creation. The study will lead us to Jesus’ inaugural sermon at Nazareth (Luke 4:14-21), and then to the way Jesus carried out his purpose. We will ask the important question for the church, and in particular this congregation: How do we carry on Jesus’ redemptive purpose in our own time and place?

Our primary translation will be the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), but feel free to bring your own Bible.

From The Youth Director
In our gospel lesson, Jesus promised to his disciples that he wouldn’t leave them alone forever. Still his disciples were getting afraid. They weren’t sure they would know what to do or what to say. So Jesus promised them an Advocate (the Holy Spirit) will be with God’s people forever to help us find the truth and live out the truth. So as we are moving to Pentecost, where do you find this Advocate in your life?

I also invite you to see our tables set up in the narthex to see what happened in this year’s Synod Assembly at Galveston as the theme was “Growing Up: Multigenerational Ministry.” Tables will have our resolutions we voted on, information about the synod’s new youth and family plan, and other goodies!
God Bless,
Ben Remmert

Sunday’s Event
8:30 Service – Reception of New Members
The following family will be welcomed into the family of Peace Lutheran Church on Sunday: Darrel & Clara Monroe, Caleb, Rose and Bethany (Transferred from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Houston.)

11:00 Service - Sr. High Milestone- Rated R
At 17, youth are becoming ready for the responsibilities associated with becoming an adult. They are learning about colleges, scholarships, work, the world, and where their place is in the world. So where does the church fit in? So today we took time with our 17-18 year olds to talk about the world outside of high school and how they can become Christian leaders in the world. Here are the youth that are celebrating this milestone: Casey Buskirk, John Craft III, Jeremy Dockan, Chris Goehring, Victoria Jacob, Matt McDonald, Zach Southard, and Brett Thornton.

A Message from Pastor Galen
This Sunday, the Gospel is John 14:1-14, where Jesus says, "In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?" I have been saying that we are an Easter Church. An Easter Church is a spiritual house where our Risen Lord has gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us. Our Second Reading will be 1 Peter 2:4-10, where the Apostle says to us, "Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house...." Our message for this Sunday draws us together to be that "spiritual house." Hymn writer, Marty Haugen, wrote a hymn text that captures this message: "Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place." Come to the place prepared for us by our Risen Lord, who shows us the way to the Father.

From The Youth Director
In Sunday’s Gospel message brings to mind the words of the Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. He told Alice that if she didn’t know where she was going, it didn’t’ matter which way she went. Jesus wants us to understand where we are going. The promise Christ makes to us is not just of new life after death, but a rich, satisfying life with Jesus now. This should bring us comfort in the difficult times during our lives and ministry. But our life can take us through some difficult territory with many obstacles and distractions. That’s why Jesus calls us to focus on him so we can make it through these challenges. So how do you center your life on Christ?
God Bless,
Ben Remmert

Sunday’s Event
9:45 am – Baptism of Whitney Ellen Regan
9:45 am – New Member Orientation in Fellowship Hall, led by Ben Remmert
12:30 pm – Congregational Meeting
2:00 pm – Women of Peace Creating Chrismons

A Message from Pastor Galen
This Sunday, May 15th, is called "Good Shepherd Sunday." Our gospel story is from the 10th chapter of John. Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd." The good shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out to pasture. The good shepherd protects his sheep and will not run away in times of danger. On Sunday we will explore our relationship to our Risen Lord. We will uplift the "good shepherding" character of Christians and of the church. Who are those among us who lead us, and guide us, and protect us? We give thanks, especially for parents who are "good shepherds" for their children. For your personal devotions in preparation for Sunday, read Psalm 23.

Pastoral Care

New Member Orientation

At this orientation you will have the opportunity to learn about who we are, what we do and what we are asking you to do with us here at Peace Lutheran. Then on Sunday, May 15th at the 11:00 am service we will receive new members. Please call Judy Griffin in the church office (281) 487-1635, or e-mail her at jgriffin@welcometopeace.com if you will be attending the orientations.

Congregational Meeting: May 15
Please mark your calendars and make a special effort to attend an important congregational meeting on Sunday immediately following the 11:00 worship service. Election of 2012 Council officers will be held at this meeting.

School is almost out… Finals are done for our college students. Our seniors are counting the days until graduation. And our youth are completing TAKS. For some of our youth and families, this is a time of celebration. For others, this is a time of grief as there are regrets that our youth and families may have had over the years. Whatever the case, this is a time to reflect from the year, what were your highs? What were your lows? But more importantly, take this time to reflect on how God has worked through your life and how God has shown God’s self to you.

God Bless,
Ben Remmert

A Message from Pastor Galen This Sunday is Palm Sunday. We begin Holy Week following in the footsteps of Jesus as he made his way into Jerusalem. People welcomed him with shouts of praise, waving of palm branches. He was welcomed as a king. But this king came riding on a donkey, a symbol not of power, but humility. Soon the enemies of Jesus found a way to silence him, and then kill him. Our Palm Sunday worship service, that begins with joy, turns quickly to the Passion of Jesus. This Sunday is also called the Sunday of the Passion. In preparation for this day you might read Matthew 21:1-11, which is the story of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Then, read the full Passion Story, Matthew 26:14--27:66. Our Second Reading on Sunday will be from Philippians 2:5-11, which is the interpretive lens for the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Blessings, Pastor Galen Congratulations To… Stephanie & Rey Mendoza and Zach on the birth of Liliana Jean Mendoza on March 31st. Family Seder Meal: April 20th at 6:30 PM During Holy Week, where we will come together to celebrate a family friendly seder meal. Please feel free to contact any of us if you have questions or comments about the call process. God’s blessings, Peace Lutheran Call Committee Some Questions From Jesus… If you never felt pain, then how would you know that I am a healer? If you never had to pray, how would you know that I am a deliverer? If you never had a trial, how could you call yourself an overcomer? If you never felt sadness, how would you know that I am a comforter? If you never made a mistake, how would you know that I am a forgiver? If you knew all, how would you know that I will answer your questions? If you never were in trouble, how would you know that I will come to your rescue? If you never were broken, then how would you know that I can make you whole? If you never had a problem, then how would you know that I can solve them? If you never had any suffering, then how would you know what I went through? If you never went through the fire, then how would you become pure? If I gave you all things, then how would you appreciate them? If I never corrected you, how would you know that I love you? If you had all power, then how would you learn to depend on me? If I never corrected you, how would you know that I love you? If your life was perfect, then what would you need me for? We will have a light meal and spend time not only creating chrismons but having fellowship as well. What’s A Chrismon???? Chrismons are a type of Christmas tree decoration used in many churches and often in the homes of Christians. We use them to decorate trees during the Advent and Christmas season. The symbols used represent a variety of biblical and theological concepts that are comprised mostly of Christian symbols which represent the life and ministry of Jesus. Chrismons are white with gold decorations of beads, ribbon, glitter etc. This will be an ongoing project for the Women of Peace and we would love for you to join us! We will have more information/details to follow. From The Youth Director I want to thank everyone for your prayers and blessings as I was commissioned as an Associate in Ministry in Word and Service. As I was commissioned, our Bishop informed me that accepting this call is a call to be ready to die for Christ. Which got me to think, what does this mean for me? What does this mean for me who is blessed to be an American in this day and age? I really do not have an answer for you, but I know in my heart that Christ loves me and that I am called to help our youth and families here at Peace to know that Love that God has for all of us. I feel that this is a calling that we have as Christians and I hope that we all feel this way as we come together in our ministries together. Take care everyone and have a blessed holy week experience. God Bless, Ben Remmert Camp Hope & VBS Mentors and Volunteers Sign Ups We are coming closer to summer, as April is almost done.
