This Sunday's Events:
Jesus certainly loves the "little children". This is three weeks in a row that we hear him challenging the disciples to see the broad hospitality of the kingdom. We are to welcome children as "you welcome me". And we have heard a threat from Jesus that if we put a stumbling block in the way of "the little ones" then we might as well have a millstone tied around our necks and be thrown into the sea. This Sunday we will hear the great admonition, "Do not hinder the children". Jesus loves the little children.
But even more so, he makes becoming like a child a sign of belonging to the kingdom. This does not mean that we are to be immature. No, it means to say that our status before God and each other is on the same level. We all stand before God as children of God. There is no hierarchy. No one is any more of a child than the other.
What this means is that we all have open access to the kingdom. This Sunday the title of my sermon is "Open Access" and I will be preaching about the doors we are to open to everyone to the grace of Jesus. I hope that you will enjoy it.
This Sunday we have our new banners hanging in our nave. Everyone who has seen them remarks about how beautiful they are. Jeanette Baugh purchased these for us before she passed away. We will have a dedication of them on October 11 at the 11:00 service. Her family is planning to attend.
This Sunday we will also be receiving new members. What joy it is to have people share in loving what we love and walk with us in the Gospel. We thank God for them.
Tuesday Evening Manna
My Tuesday Evening online program is a lot of fun. If you get a chance, click on the program. This past week I had a chat with someone about "religion-less Christianity." We also had a good chat about "little ones" in the text for this Sunday. Evening Manna is a 20-30 minute live broadcast. In the program we look at the upcoming Sunday biblical texts and offer reflection and interaction with them. At the end of the program there is an opportunity to lift up prayer concerns. This will be each broadcast each Tuesday at 9:00 pm. You will need your Bible with you. You can find the station either through the "Peace Connection" on our website or at DrDTart Station.
Council Meeting Last Sunday
We met for 4 hours for Bible study, prayer, sharing in the Lord's Supper and, of course, discerning the will of God in our work as a congregation. Highlights included the following:
•Adoption of a "Good Samaritan Fund" policy
•A call for all touched by the Churchwide Sexuality Statement and Ministry Policies to prayer and discernment and to endorse my September 2009 newsletter article on this subject and to host an open forum in October and/or November to give opportunity for discussion, discernment and prayer (see below about forum)
•Discussion and decision to work further on bids for the playground and sanctuary improvement projects (please be patient. We are working to get these projects right. We are also involving members who have only so much time to share.)
•Discussed Goals for 2009 and 2010, 2010 budget, nominations, finance policies, Lutherhill Capital Campaign participation, current financial situation.
The meeting went fast and because of the "spiritual climate" no one left tired or burdened. We also make good use of online collaboration between meetings and are printing our online communication for the unwilling and unable. We also decided to have a special meeting when the bids for the sanctuary and playground are ready. Our next meeting is Nov. 2.
Annual Meeting was set for December 13 after the 11:00 service.
Thank you for your prayers. We are grateful for those who have answered the call to serve as our leaders.
Open Forum on Human Sexuality Statement and Ministry Policies: Oct. 20, 7pm
The council will host an open forum to better understand the significance for Peace the Human Sexuality Social Statement and Ministry Policies voted on by our Churchwide Assembly in August. We will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 7:00-8:30 in the sanctuary.
Please read the social statement and ministry policies before you come. They are available on the elca.org webpage and in the narthex.
David Booher Resignation as of Dec. 6
The council also accepted the resignation of David with sadness, thanksgiving for his ministry and God's blessings on his future. His last Sunday is Dec 6.
David has been a great blessing to our church and we will miss him. I have enjoyed immensely working with him. We will be saying more about this in the time ahead. I encourage all of you to make personal time to say thanks to him and wish him well.
We will have a "Youth Minister Transition" workshop on Monday, Oct 19 at 7pm for the purpose of working on the transition to a new youth minister. The workshop is open to everyone who has interest in being a part of the process. This includes youth. We want to begin as soon as possible to find someone.

Care Packages
We are going to send “Care Packages” to our members who are serving in the military. A list of items that are wanted and needed will be made available.

Stewardship Workshop
We will have a workshop to grow the Stewardship Ministry at Peace on Wednesday October 7 at 6:00 pm at Daren and Kami Guertin's home, 2706 White Sands Drive Deer Park, TX 77536. This is open to everyone interested in growing this ministry at Peace. Dinner is included.
First Communion Instruction
Eucharist, Lord's Supper, Communion, Body of Christ, that other Sacrament - whatever you call it, it's time for more students to learn about it! We will be holding our First Communion Instruction Classes at 12:30 pm on October 4, 11, and 18. Students in 3rd grade and up are encouraged to attend this important class to learn everything about Communion. On November 1st all these students will receive their First Communion at their Sunday worship service. On October 25th, we will also be making our own bread for the November 1st worship services.
PCM Food Drive Sunday
On the first Sunday of the month we hold our monthly food drive for Pasadena Community Ministries, Thank you for your donation of non-perishable food items for this very important ministry. You can place your donations by the cabinet outside of the fellowship hall. Of course, monetary gifts are also accepted. Please make your check payable to Peace Lutheran Church and write “PCM” in the memo section. Please remember to keep PCM in your prayers, and thank you for your caring and sharing.
Come Celebrate With Us
The family of Joshua Jorgenson invite you to celebrate with them on Friday, October 9th at 7:00 pm, when Joshua will receive the Eagle Scout Award. The ceremony will be held here at Peace Lutheran. Refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

This Sunday's Events:
This Sunday we continue our journey with Jesus in Mark as he takes his disciple's through Galilee. Here he teaches them about his death on the cross and his rising from the tomb. He also teaches them about their identity as his followers. In particular, he teaches them that the community that gathers in his name will be known by service and hospitality.
This Sunday is our annual Women of Peace's "Thankoffering Sunday" and we invite all women to bring a financial offering to support our women's organization. Women will be leading our worship and Sandee Page will be sharing a sermon.
We will also be presenting Bibles to our first graders at all services and enrolling our 2009-2010 confirmation class at the 11:00.
We will also have Blood Pressure Screening at 9:00 am
After the 11:00 worship we will be having a Worship Workshop in the fellowship hall for everyone interested in the worship life of Peace. Our work list includes evaluating our current worship services and planning our Advent, Christmas and Epiphany liturgies. Please feel free to come. We will have a lunch and we should be done by 3:00 pm.

I had my first Evening Manna broadcast and I enjoyed it. I am hoping that you will consider participating in this effort to utilize the internet to grow spiritually.
Evening Manna is a 20-30 minute live broadcast. In the program we look at the upcoming Sunday biblical texts and offer reflection and interaction with them. At the end of the program there is an opportunity to lift up prayer concerns. This will be each Tuesday. You will need your Bible with you.
Here is how it works: We will be using "BlogTV", a free online service. You can just view the broadcast or you can participate by live chat. All you have to do is click on the link. You will have to watch an advertisement in the beginning. You can find the station either through the "Peace Connection" on our website or at DrDTart Station.
BlogTV prohibits sexual exploitation and harassment. It is a world wide service so there are all types of people using this service. But just as with TV, you only have to listen and watch what you chose.
Please consider giving this a try. I know many of you have an evening ritual, but just make a note or set an alarm clock. After a while, I think you will find this a great little boast to your sense of God's peace and grace in your life.

The Playground team has two bids and is collecting a third. We should have a recommendation for council. We have a Google Group if you are interested in joining the effort. Go to the Peace Homepage and click "Peace Groups".

50+ Bus Trip
On September 21 we're going to visit the Pasadena Heritage Park & Museum. Many people aren't aware of Pasadena's rich heritage and that Pasadena is the actual birthplace of Free Texas. The area earned that distinction in 1836 when Deaf Smith and his company of six men destroyed the only bridge crossing Vince Bayou, preventing Mexican soldiers at San Jacinto Battlefield from receiving reinforcements or escaping. Their heroic actions led to the capture of Santa Anna and helped to secure the independence of Texas.
We'll visit the original homes of the Pomeroy and Parks families, some of the first settlers to the Pasadena area. We'll see vintage furniture, clothing and antiques from the 1900 era, Pasadena's first city water well, a historic mobile water-drilling rig designed and patented by the Pomeroy's in the 1900's.
Anyone 50 and over is invited to join us to discover history right here in Pasadena. The cost of the bus is $3.00, and will leave Peace parking lot at 9:30 am. Call Sharon, (281) 489-9790, or Virginia, (281) 487-4961 for reservations.

Tuesday Evening Manna
I had my first Evening Manna broadcast and I enjoyed it. I am hoping that you will consider participating in this effort to utilize the internet to grow spiritually.
Evening Manna is a 20-30 minute live broadcast. In the program we look at the upcoming Sunday biblical texts and offer reflection and interaction with them. At the end of the program there is an opportunity to lift up prayer concerns. This will be each Tuesday. You will need your Bible with you.
Here is how it works: We will be using "BlogTV", a free online service. You can just view the broadcast or you can participate by live chat. All you have to do is click on the link. You will have to watch an advertisement in the beginning.
You can find the station either through the "Peace Connection" on our website or at DrDTart Station
BlogTV prohibits sexual exploitation and harassment. It is a world wide service so there are all types of people using this service. But just as with TV, you only have to listen and watch what you chose.
Please consider giving this a try. I know many of you have an evening ritual, but just make a note or set an alarm clock. After a while, I think you will find this a great little boast to your sense of God's peace and grace in your life.

This Sunday's Events:
The title of my sermon is "First Things First" and I will be preaching about how we should not let the little things get in the way of the big things in our lives. For background for this Sunday's readings go to http://textweek.com.
We will begin our new Sunday School year with a kickoff Rally at 9:45 am. We will have a new curriculum this year called "Witness". Go to this website http://www.augsburgfortress.
We will be serving breakfast in the fellowship hall. We ask everyone to be there.
We will also be installing our Sunday School teachers and leaders at the 8:30 and 11:00 services. We will also be blessing our new Sunday school year.
We will also be having an inquiry luncheon for those interested in Peace Lutheran. We will meet after the 11:00 service in the Fellowship Hall for a meal and conversation.

In August our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America met in a churchwide assembly with voters from all the synods to conduct the work of our national church. The theme of the assembly was "God's Work, Our Hands". I encourage all of you to go to the ELCA website to read and watch videos of the week’s events. http://elca.org. The most controversial issue by far was the votes in support of the new social statement on sexuality called, "Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust". You can read about it at:http://www.elca.org/What-We
This teaching document allows the church to have a standing disagreement about the ethics of homosexuality and lifelong same sex relationships. The statement does not support any position, but just states the obvious conflict on this issue in the ELCA. The statement calls for all members to respect "the bound conscious" of each other on this issue.
The assembly also voted to allow ordination of clergy who are in lifelong, publicly accountable same sex relationships on a local basis. You can read this statement athttp://www.elca.org/What-We-
The statement allows for a "structured flexibility". What this means is that no congregation will be forced to call a pastor they do not want and congregations will have the flexibility, in certain approved circumstances, to call the pastor they do want. The statement tries to find a middle ground. We are still waiting to see how the national church will implement these new ministry guidelines.
Even in our own congregation there is division on these sexuality issues. Here is my guidance.
First and foremost the church is always and forever local. What matters most in our congregation is our proclamation of the Gospel and our living out this evangelical mission in our community. God has sent us here and we stay focused on how we believe the Spirit is leading us to do mission and ministry in this community. What this means is that we do not let ourselves become distracted with issues that are not relevant to us. No pastor in a same sex publicly accountable relationship is seeking to serve our congregation. Same sex marriage is illegal in the state of Texas. We have enough challenges as a church without adding controversy that is not directly relevant us.
Second, we affirm the great gift of baptism and the love poured out on all people. We do not preach condemnation, but John 3:16, "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life". What this means is that we respect everyone's conscience on this matter. We lay before people the teachings of the Word of God on sexuality and let them decide how they should respond. We do not excommunicate people about this issue.
Furthermore, I am not comfortable discussing sexuality in public and I leave it as a private matter as long as it is not abusive or exploitive of others. Because of my reluctance, I will not preach about this or have classes. If you want to discuss this privately, I am available.
The bottom line is this: God needs our hands to do his work here in our area. Let us roll up our sleeves and concentrate on the mission field before us. We have children to nurture. We have care to offer. We have the hungry to feed. We have prayer and worship to do. We have great truths from scripture to learn. We have a Gospel centered community to build. We have people lost in brokenness and despair all around us and we have a Gospel to share with them.
Remember: Stay focused on God's work, our hands.
Vocational Sunday, September 6
On this Sunday we will be recognizing the ministry of our vocations as part of our Sunday worship. We ask that you wear your work clothes if you want and we will have a bulletin board for you to share what you do during the week. Special note: This includes homemaker or those staying at home. Martin Luther teaches us the biblical truth that all vocations are callings from God and holy work. We practice our Christian service to others in daily work. We will have a special blessing as part of the service.
Bible Studies Resume
We will resume both the Wednesday Morning and Evening Bible Studies next week. I will be teaching a study of the upcoming Sunday readings on from 10-11:30 and Pastor Gary Morgan-Gohlke will be teaching an evening program from 7-8:30 on the Trinity with a discussion of the book, The Shack. Both are great opportunities to grow in your faith life and discipleship.

Sunday's Events:
Since August 24 is the first day of school we will have a special blessing for students, teachers, education staff and workers at all three services this Sunday. We will also recognize all children starting kindergarten and their first step toward graduation. We ask all the youth and children to bring their backpacks as part of the blessing. We will have a special gift for them.
This Sunday we will be concluding our reading of John 6, The title of my sermon is "To Whom Shall We Go" and I will be preaching about how turning to Christ is our only option.
We should have a lot of fun.

Google Groups
Please go to this link for access to Peace Google Groups. Google groups is a new way for us to collaborate on our mission and ministry at Peace without depending on face-to-face meetings. All you have to do to join most groups is to just click on the link. Some you might need to have an invitation. To fully use the Google Group you will need to have a Google Account using your normal email address. Just go to google.com and click "sign in" on the top right corner and follow the instructions (I have a training video to help explain hi).
The model for leading our ministries will be workshops and Google Group online collaboration. Of course, ministry and mission at Peace is always more about the Indian than the bow and arrow. What matters most is your willingness to do the mission and ministry at Peace. We are moving away from a Pastor and Staff led church, to a mission and ministry led church. We are trying to establish a collaborative environment for ministry when lay people work together in doing the work of God. Collaboration is fun and exciting and I hope that you will give it a try. You can now do the work from the comfort of your home.
Property Outreach Improvement Projects
Playground Project: We are in the design stage and have met with a playground company for insight and direction. We have a bulletin board in the hallway by the offices for your input and ideas. We are asking especially for children to draw what they think the playground should look like. If you would like to be involved with the project, join the Google Group. The playground will be located on the education building side of the big lot in the back. We are looking to accommodate up to 30 children, ages 2-12. We are moving slow because we want to do a thorough job.
Labyrinth Project: We are still in the design stage. We are looking to place the labyrinth on the grass behind the fellowship hall with removable stone pavers. If you would like to be involved, we have a meeting on Tuesday. Feel free to come.
Sanctuary Repairs and Improvements. We are look at contractors to do the work and producing bids that have the improvements and repairs cost individually listed.

Inquiry Luncheon
Come and welcome our visitors who are interested in learning more about Peace! We are having a luncheon Sunday, August 30 at 12:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. If you are new to Peace, you are more than welcome to come to this informal and relaxed lunch where we welcome you to ask any questions you may have about our church family. This is a great opportunity for our members to meet with our visitors and share what Peace means to us! Bullyingproofing Your Child
There will be an educational session on preventing bullying at home, in school and online next Thursday in the Fellowship Hall at 7 pm. People of all ages should plan to attend this valuable opportunity. Babysitting will be available. Please invite friends and neighbors and RSVP David Booher at 281-487-1635.
Godly Play Group at Peace
The Godly Play Group at Peace is for young children and their parents to enjoy free playtime and fellowship in Christ. It is geared for infants to 5 years old, but siblings are always welcome. What we do… usually we begin with free play time, have story and song time with David Booher then close with a coloring/art activity. We then move to the Fellowship Hall for prayer and lunch. (Bring a sack lunch.) This is a loosely structured play group where parents participate in play with their children. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. If you have any questions please contact Alycia at (281) 478-6070. We hope that you’ll join us on Tuesday, and bring a friend!
Stop the Choking Game
There will be an educational session on stopping the phenomenon of kids and teenagers harming themselves through the “Choking Game” tonight in the Fellowship Hall at 7 pm. Adults and youth are invited and encouraged to attend. Neighbors and visitors are (as always) welcome too!
Summer Trips Thank You Dinner
This Wednesday (August 26) at 7 pm there will be a special “Thank You Dinner” for all those who purchased Stock at our last fundraiser. Attendees will also receive a special DVD chronicling our Mission Trip and our Lutherhill Summer Camp weeks. It is not too late to purchase a DVD or a ticket to this dinner!
Jr High Lock-In
There will be a beginning of the year kick-off Lock-In for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on Friday, August 28. We will meet here at the church at 8 pm Friday night for games, activities and a Bible Study. Saturday morning we will have breakfast and then head to the Wave Pool! Sr High New Braunfels Trip
