This Sundays Events
We will be having our first Sunday in Lent and Pastor Karen Wilhelm will be our guest preacher and presider.
Reminder: We Have Two Services During Our Remodeling of the Sanctuary
Due to remodeling the sanctuary and the logistical issues with worshiping in the Fellowship Hall, we will be having only the 8:30 and 11:00 service with Sunday School at its regular time. After the remodeling, we will resume our three service routine. The remodeling should be complete the first part of March. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The remodeling is going well. We have the pews out and ceiling repairs have begun. The council has selected the paint and carpet.
Lenten Services and Soup Suppers
My preaching themes will center on the Epistle readings from Sunday morning. These texts have wonderful images and messages to help us in our journey to Easter. I hope you will enjoy them. This Wednesday, Casey Buskirk, one of our senior high youth, will be sharing the evening message. I have been meeting with him. I will be preaching at the midday service.
We will have noon soup and a midday service at 12:30 pm.
We will also have Lenten Soup suppers at 6:00 pm with a prayer service following at 7:00 pm. (Babysitting is provided for the evening service.)
Playground Update
We met with the contractor and have a plan to resolve the issues. Work has resumed this week.
Youth Transition Team
We have completed our interview of candidate one and we will interview our second candidate on February 27-28. The council should make their decision on March 7.
Pasadena Faith in Action, March 27, 7:30am at IBEW at 4345 Allen Genoa,
This Sunday we will begin signing up for a united effort by churches in the Pasadena area to serve our community with minor repairs, light construction, painting, clean-up, yard work, and basic landscaping.
You can register at Peace by filling in a form or going online at http://www.pasadenafaithinaction.com and download the form and send it to our church office.
The cost is $10 and will include a lunch and t-shirt. The work should be completed in the afternoon.
We are encouraging families to serve together. Youth can also serve, but they will need an adult sponsor.
Also, if you know any home owner in need of any of the above work around their home, please contact the church office for an application.
Habitat for Humanity Service Opportunity
Habitat for Humanity Pasadena is building a house in Pasadena on Ann Street. Thrivent for Lutherans and Churches in the Pasadena area are supplying volunteer labor and funds to build the house. Peace Lutheran Church is part of that effort. We are currently soliciting volunteers to participate in the build. We are also beginning a fund raising effort. Our goal is to raise $1000 by the end of February. The other participant churches are also raising funds.
There is a sign up sheet in the narthex for volunteers. If you have not signed up you may continue to do so. Your time commitment is for whatever you can manage. We will keep you posted about volunteer work times as we get closer to the build date.
You can participate in the fund raising by purchasing a virtual board of siding or box of siding nails. A board of siding costs a $10.00 donation and a box of nails costs a $5.00 donation. You will receive a certificate documenting your donation and we will post a “board” or “box” with your name on the bulletin board as we track progress toward our goal (you may remain anonymous if you wish). We only have 2 weeks to meet this goal so we need your prompt attention to this appeal. I will be in the narthex starting on February 21 to collect donations. Ted Brenneman – Peace Habitat Champion.

Music Observance During Lent
Ash Wednesday, February 17th, began our Lenten journey that leads us to the joyful resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. Music during Lent focuses on Jesus’ sacrifice and suffering for our sins, and is more somber. We also omit some music during Lent because of its somber and reflective nature. We will not sing “Alleluia” in worship until Easter. Also, this Lent we will not have pre-service and post-service music. We invite you to use the time before worship for prayer and meditation.
Senior Citizen’s Day Cancelled
Senior Citizen’s Day, scheduled for Wednesday, is cancelled for this month. Join us at 11:45 am for our midweek Lenten soup lunch followed by our worship service.
Blood Pressure Screening on Sunday
On the third Sunday of each month the Parish Nurses offer free blood pressure screening. They will be available on Sunday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Library. This is for all ages – children, too!
50+ Bus Trip for March
On March 30th, we're going to Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, a tranquil sanctuary with over 300 types of plants and a wide variety of wildlife. Cost of Shangri La is $8.00 and the bus is $3.00. Call Virginia Rodriguez, (281) 487-4961 or Judy Speck, (281) 470-0407 if you want to join us on this trip.

LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project
The midweek Bible Study group is a “partner” in the coffee business and sells coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix through the Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project. Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love, mercy and walk humbly. The LWR Coffee Project helps Lutherans answer that call by righting the injustices faced by small-scale farmers around the world. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in our congregation and homes, we are helping farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors. Go to http://facebook.com for more information and search Facebook for Peace Lutheran Church, Pasadena Texas. We look forward to you joining.
We invite you to wear something blue on Sunday as way to clothe ourselves in the hope of Christ that the Advent season celebrates. Blue is the color of the Advent season.
This Sunday's Events:
We celebrate our last Sunday in Advent with the great reading of Mary's song to Elizabeth. Her song speaks of the humbleness of being used in such a way by God, but also it celebrates the way God "lifts the lowly" and "brings down the mighty".
I will be preaching from the Old Testament reading from Micah and will be exploring the importance of Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus and as an image of the Gospel. I hope that you enjoy it.
On Sunday morning we will also welcome the following people into the family of Peace Lutheran Church:
Jennifer Holland, Drew and Paige
(Affirmation of Baptism)
Tony & Rhonda Pena and Bianca
(Transferred from Christ Redeemer Lutheran Church, Deer Park, TX)
Jay & Sandy Tillis
(Transferred from Faith Lutheran Church, Dickinson, TX)
Please be sure to introduce yourself to these families after the service.
Lesson and Carols Service, Sunday, December 27 at 10:00.
ONE SERVICE ONLY, NO COMMUNION AND NO SUNDAY SCHOOL.
Christmas Eve Family Service:
We are searching for a boy and girl to play the parts of Mary and Joseph (no speaking parts).
We are also searching for children and youth who would be willing to play Christmas music (religious only) during the service. We want this service to highlight the many gifts of our children and young people.
If you have someone contact, Jan Woodard
Christmas Eve Family Photos:
One of the great traditions is that David Slater in years past has offered to take picture of worshipers in front of the Peace Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Due to health concerns, he will be unable to offer this.
Is there anyone who can offer to take pictures before and/or after a service? We can provide a simple camera to use. The church will pay for the processing of the pictures. Contact Jan Woodard or Pastor Tart if you can. This is a great way to serve others.
Christmas Eve Services:
Our Christmas Eve services are:
4:00 pm Family Service with candlelighting, bells, and special spontaneous acting out of the Christmas story by the children. They will also be leading the congregation in singing "Away in the Manger". Communion will also be celebrated.
7:30 pm Traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with Spirit of Peace and communion
11:00 pm Candlelight communion service with special music by the choir and musicians. (The choir will also sing the Bach cantata, “To Us a Child Is Born” with soloists, flute, violin and organ.)
Extra Parking Spaces Available
For your convenience during the holiday season, if our church parking lot is full, we have permission from the Dentist and CPA offices (located next door) to park in their lot.
Playground Update
Due to weather and the time of year, the playground will not be completed until after January 1.
Opportunity for Generosity
As our church heads into the final months of 2009 you received a letter explaining our financial situation. The bottom line is that giving needs to improve. We ask for you to give according to your faith and we respect everyone in their faith journey. Our challenge is creating a climate of generosity that gives out of faith and joy, not out of guilt and duty.
For us to continue our current ministries we are asking each giving unit to contribute an extra $100 to our general fund. This would give us $30,000 to meet our mission and ministry goals.
We have a lot of growing to do in this area. I would like to invite you to email me and let me hear what the barriers are to your giving. Or if you want your identity hid, I have also created an blog where you can comment without being identified. We need to hear the barriers that we need to overcome to grow our church where it needs to be. Please be honest.

This Sunday's Events
We had a great farewell for David and he left us knowing just how much his ministry meant. Thanks to all who made it so very special.
This Sunday, the big events are the annual meeting in the fellowship hall after the 11:00 service and the Sunday School Christmas program at 5:00 pm.
The Lunch Bunch will meet following the annual meeting at Tequila Boom in Clear Lake.
Our annual meeting is required by law and we must approve the budget and elect leadership. Please make every effort to attend. We need to have a quorum. This is everyone's responsibility.
The title of my sermon is, "What Are We to Do?", and I will be talking about how repentance is really a great thing in our lives and how God helps us to change destructive attitudes and habits. Repentance is always about action. But the great thing is that the end of repentance is the joy of Grace and new beginnings. I hope you enjoy it.
Wednesday Advent Soup Suppers and Holden Evening Prayer continues, 6:00 Soup Supper, 7:00 Service
On December 16, I have invited, the Norwegian Lutheran Seaman's church pastor to have the devotion for us. Her name is Rev. Ingrid Fallegard. I promise you will not want to miss her.
Since I speak Norwegian, we have set up a reciprocal pastoral care relationship between our church and theirs. They will minister in my absence and me in theirs. This is a great benefit to the members of both of our churches. They speak excellent English by the way.
We will also be decorating the Christmas tree each Wednesday. We always have a lot of fun with this.
This will be our last Advent Soup Supper. We thank the men of Peace, the women of Peace and the Council for bringing soups to share.

Worship Assistants Needed for Christmas Eve Services
We’re still looking for some volunteers to serve at our Christmas Eve services at 4:00 pm, 7:30 pm and 11:00 pm. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex. We are also still in need of assisting ministers and lectors. Thanks for all of your hard work. Jan Woodard Smith
Advent Card
Each year the Women of Peace provide us with an Advent Card. In lieu of sending Christmas cards to everyone in our congregation, we combine our money toward a special project. The 2009 Advent Card can be found on the table in the narthex through December 13th. Please use the blue envelopes for your contribution. (Make checks payable to Women of Peace.) You may place your envelope in the weekly collection plate. This year the money collected will go towards the Confirmation Scholarship Fund. The Advent Card is published and available at our Christmas Eve services. If you have any questions, see Becky White.
LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project - Sunday
The midweek Bible Study group continues to sell coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix through the Lutheran World Relief Fair Trade Coffee Project. Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love, mercy and walk humbly. By using Fair Trade coffee and other products in our congregation and homes, we are helping farmers receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors. Be sure to stop by the table in the narthex and support this project.
End of Year Giving
According to IRS requirements, checks must be dated and postmarked December 31, 2009 in order to claim a charitable deduction for 2009. If you are considering a donation to the church before the end of the year, please keep this in mind.
Poinsettias
Sunday is the last day to sign up for poinsettias. If you would like to donate a poinsettia plant to place in the church for Christmas Eve, please sign the sheet in the narthex. We ask that you bring your plant to the church during the week of December 13th. You may take your plants home on December 27th. Any questions please call Pam Cronan at (713) 492-2811.

“To all the Peace Lutheran Family...
On Monday, December 7, I moved to Fairbanks, Alaska to be close to my fiancée, Brenna, and pursue a new and exciting chapter in my life. These past four years serving you and being a part of this church have shown me the love of Christ in new and enlightening ways. I am truly thankful for the opportunity God has given me to teach and serve the people in this community. May God continue to bless you and stir up this community of faith with the Holy Spirit.

We will bid farewell to David at all three services. He will be preaching at all three services on that day. Annual Meeting, December 13 after the 11
Our annual meeting is set for December 13 after the 11:00 service. At the meeting we will conduct any business of the church, elect leadership and voters to the church assembly, and approve our 2010 budget. We will also approve our annual report. Copies of the 2010 budget are available in the narthex.

This Sunday's Events
We will bid farewell to David at all three services. He will be preaching at all three services on that day. Also, we will have a special card basket and encourage everyone to drop him a card and personal note. David has meant a lot to our congregation and we are sad about his leaving, but we are excited about his future.
At the 11:00 am service, Joy Moore will be baptized as well as receive her first communion along with Christeen Gaspard and Samantha Watt.
Wednesday Advent Soup Suppers and Holden Evening Prayer continues. 6:00 pm Soup Supper, 7:00 pm Service
I will be having the devotion next Wednesday. We thank Martha Digges for her wonderful and touching story about generosity.
On December 16th I have invited, the Norwegian Lutheran Seaman's church pastor to have the devotion for us.
Playground Update
The playground is taking shape. What a great thing it will be for our children and the children of our community. It should be done in a couple of weeks.
This would give us $30000 to meet our mission and ministry goals.
We have a lot of growing to do in this area. I would like to invite you to email me and let me hear what the barriers are to your giving. Or if you want your identity hid, I have also created a blog where you can comment without being identified. We need to hear the barriers that we need to overcome to grow our church where it needs to be. Please be honest.

A Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!
We invite you to wear something blue on Sunday as a way to clothe ourselves in the hope of Christ that the Advent season celebrates. Blue is the color of the Advent season.
This Sunday's Events:
I am very excited about our upcoming reading of Luke. In this Sunday's Gospel we start off with the announcement of the coming reign of God and how we need to be alert for its coming. The title of my sermon is, "The Kingdom of God is Near" and I will be preaching about seeing the signs of God's good and gracious reign all around us. Especially in a world that wants to blur the reign of God. We need to keep our perspective and eyes wide open. I hope that you will be blessed by the message.

Salvation Army Stocking Stuffing Program
Christmas traditions are very important. The tradition of a child hanging a stocking on Christmas Eve and waking up on Christmas morning to see what Santa has brought is a tradition that has lasted through the ages. The Salvation Army started the Christmas Stocking Stuffing Program in 1984 and it has been a yearly tradition since. Each year hundreds of families receive toys for their children and along with those toys they receive a stocking that has been stuffed by volunteer organizations and individuals like you. Stockings are still available today in the narthex. Please return stockings to Peace Lutheran no later than December 3rd. If you have any questions call Mavis Greif at (281) 482-6823. Thank you for your generosity and giving spirit. May God bless you as you will be blessing others.

Last Sunday for Diane Jorgenson’s Golden Award Project
“My vision is to help the families and patients at the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston. Many families are seeking medical treatments for cancer and burns, and at the RMH they can receive that much needed help. Families come from all over to get these much needed treatments, and most of the time they come empty handed. The house provides shelter, clothing, food and any other necessary items needed for the families. I would like to help make it possible for the RMH to continue helping those in need. By doing so the current and new families/patients that come to the house can feel more at home in their new surroundings. Here is a great opportunity to help those in need. There is a box in the narthex in which you can make your contributions for the Ronald McDonald House.
Items needed: Travel size soaps, shampoos, conditioners, tooth paste and tooth brushes, coloring books, crayons, UNO cards, regular card decks, Spanish books for kids and paper towels. Thank you for your help. Diane Jorgenson
Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
